for e.g. prior to this was the ES8(1.5L) / ES5(1.6L) and also ES1(1.7L)

 

for the new civic, FD1(1.8L) / FD2(2.0L) / FD3(Hybrid) and also FD4(1.6L)

 

the same goes for other makes of cars, for e.g. Mitsubishi Evo has the CT9A chassis code, however Evo X, will use a completely redesigned chassis, so the code may change.

I understand it's the chassis code. But at 1st when I heard that the code for this new Civic is called FD, immediately the Rx-7 FD came into my mind Except that for Rx-7, it's FD3s while for Civic, it's FD1, 2, 3 & so on..
