Oil Change 5w20

Oil filter can filter down to 15um only, anything smaller than that will get through the filter into the oiling system.

Frequent oil change for running in is quite reasonable until the engine wear level has stabilize which normally do after >15k.

Check with the Honda drivers who have made a switch to 20wt oil. Their engines are made for it. Ditto with Ford and Mazda and now Toyota. Other car makes, check manual but 20wt will become standard.

Hi Genie,

I drive a Chevy Optra. The manual indicate use of 40wt for Singapore temp. range. What do you think, can use 20wt for optra ?

Thanks

In the US, Optra's engine is the Aveo's engine. They spec 5W30 lowest. The damn manual makes no sense. They ask for GF3 oil and they recommend 10W40 lowest. Makes no sense. There is no 10W40 that meets GF3. No 5W40 meets GF3 either. Mobil Gold 0W40 meets GF3 but some people question it because you really need to be in the 30wt and below range to qualify for GF3 and GF4.

Ok so if I get this right :

1) Almost all new cars can take 20wt oil despite what the mechanics say and what the

manual say.

2) The weather does not really play a part in the viscosity choice of the engine oil.

Our weather is suitable for a 20wt oil.

3) A 20wt oil can be used up to 10km of driving.

4) A RON 92,95,98 or the highest end petrol will not mean much if your car's engine is

not tuned for it.

5) Someone in this thread also mentioned that the new generation cars can automatically

tune itself to take advantage of the RON of petrol being used.

So I have a few questions assuming what I say above is correct.

I am driving a JDM(Toyota) 2.4l MPV :

1) That means that I can use a 20wt oil for my 5k servicing? Currently using a 5w40

Castrol edge oil after my 1k servicing. Not sure whats the minimum recommended

because my manual is in Japanese.

2) Can I also downgrade to a RON 95 petrol? Or should I stick to 98 assuming I chose to

ignore the $$$ savings if I use a RON 95 petrol.

If it is JDM grocery getter engine, confirm can take 20wt.

JDM can take advantage of RON100 if it is available. At RON95, you get somewhat economy and power. You got do your sums. BTW, fuel economy is not about km/L. It is $/km traveled.

Servicing interval of 10k is conservative. If it takes forever to get to 10k, then 6mths interval is good too.

Any facts to back you up? I have used Fuch 0W-20 in my car b4 for 10K and no problem at all, not even the slightest drop in oil level.

my getz manual recommends 5w20 wt for the car . btw .. my car also manages an easy 14km/l without valve wizardry . just a trusty manual gearbox and judicous use of the right foot. so taht's all

why some mechanics insist that thicker oil means more protection?

every workshop i went the mechanic will surely say something about my engine oil i bought. unsure.gif

i once visited the workshop at thomson rd, the one with $10 oil change. i bought 3 bottles of Schaeffer 10W30 there, when the mechanic saw my oil, they ask me where did i purchase it? the two mechanics said to themselves that nowadays people anyhow use & buy engine oil. he told me that that the engine oil i bought is no good...i replied with a smiled...unimpressed.gif

Even Kah Motors Service Advisor commented that my Mobil 5w30 was way too thin for my car's liking.

Wonder if they have basic knowledge of engine oils or not. [dead]
