Neutral Newbie

Haven't got chance to go thru the manual.

My authorised service centre only carries W30 (from Japan) and W40 (from US) syn oil.

Last visit I ask the chief mec a similar question. He say 20 or 30 is ok for lightfoot driver. For heavyfoot who often rev the rpm is better to stick to 40 or above for more protection. Rev often cause high heat and 20 oil become too watery offers less protection and engine wear off more. Engine will not wear off immediately but more in longer run resulting drop of power and more smoke. For urban driver change oil more often is better.

I think his explanation makes sense. Manufacture sure like people to change more often [sly]

My apologies to hitch a ride on this thread. Can anyone comment on the Caltex Havoline engine oils? Seems like it is not a common oil to be discussed in the forum..

The USA version Havoline mineral oil contains a heavy dose of "Moly", in the range of 400-500ppm. It's very highly regarded in BITOG and is consider as one of the best mineral oil around.

Oh, fyi Havoline & Chevron Supreme are the exact same product produce by the same company.

Izzit? I mention to him that I hear people say 20 oil is very ok. The chief mec say, sure ok because the people who say not paying for the tear and wear in the engine. The owner is. If anything wrong the owner need to replace parts or scrap and replace the car. He say if car rev with thin oil will guarantee wear off more, make sense? What do you think ah? [sweatdrop][confused]

Ask him to prove it!

There's alot of UOA that has proven beyond doubt that under normal (non-racing) situation, 20wt oil protects the engine as well as 40wt oil in our tropic climate.

Check with the Honda drivers who have made a switch to 20wt oil. Their engines are made for it. Ditto with Ford and Mazda and now Toyota. Other car makes, check manual but 20wt will become standard.

Hi Genie

You seem to know a lot about engine oil. I currently driving a new car. The manual says servicing for 1k 5k and 10k should be done in 1mth, 3mth and 6mth respectively. Should I follow the milage or interval? For example, after 1 mth if my milage is only 600km, should I go change the oil? Or wait until 1000km which should take more than a month?

Should I stick to mineral for 1k and 5k servicing and then use synthetic for 10k servicing? Will it do any harm to my engine if I use a thin oil at 10k servicing? Any recommendations?

If you make 600km/mth, I suggest a 6mth interval. If you make 10k in 4mths, then I suggest a 3mth interval.

Thin oil will not harm your engine. New car engines like their oil thin.

1k servicing is obsolete. The factory fill in the car is the best synthetic ol there is by the manufacturer. Best got 10k then drain but I doubt your retailer is going to let you do that. rolleyes.gif

But I thought the first 1k is running in period so there will be lots of metal deposits floating around the oil hence should drain more often? Or else would not they act as abrasives to the piston and rings?
