Sony 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Author Share July 27, 2006 Can't remember what is the company's name... when I met them during one of the exhibitions, they offer to give me a sample of the BMW's shark fin but seeing that it came with 2 points, I decline. On 2nd tot, I shd have just taken it 1st
Zafira18 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 Thats is a multi-band antenna that cover: 1. AM 2. FM 3. VHF & UHF for TV 4. GSM 5. GPS
Sony 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Author Share July 27, 2006 ya... it come with 2 mounting points. So if I were to take that, I either have to drill one more hole in my roof or grind away the GPS/GSM connecting point.
Sony 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Author Share July 27, 2006 Another technical qns: Can I add in the brosch in car antenna to support a very short antenna which I will have on the outside. Or I have to only use one and cannot combine them.
Elfenstar 3rd Gear July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 (edited) Another technical qns: Can I add in the brosch in car antenna to support a very short antenna which I will have on the outside. Or I have to only use one and cannot combine them. If you want splice them together using wire connectors. That would prolly void your case with GM, unless you can get an extension cord spliced and the original one pluged into that. This would prolly mean you get better reception. the easier way would be to run a new cable for the internal unit (don't they come with it anyway??) This would go under your dash, behind the a-pillar then under the front of the roof trim, coming out at the middle and attach the new antenna behind the rear view mirror. I forgot to mention, the AF/FM antenna wire and plug is basically like an RCA cable. wire in the middle carries the info. wire on the outside is just shielding. Sony 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Author Share July 27, 2006 the easier way would be to run a new cable for the internal unit (don't they come with it anyway??) So the new cable will replace the original wiring to the antenna on my roof? As for the 1st option, I believe those audio shop people will know what to do if I want to do that? with 2 antenna, will I get interferences?
Elfenstar 3rd Gear July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 if you're using one, leave the original wiring... its quite a hassle to get it out as a lot of trim has to come out. Theoratically i think there should some interferance as the signal will hit the antennas at differnt times. As psych research has taught me, its not the difference that matters, its how significant the difference is honestly this is really not an area i know much off other than how join the wires or installing a new/stand alone antenna. Our ICE ppl would be in better stead to tell you if there will be any interferance.
Sony 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Author Share July 27, 2006 I don't have any intention to take out any wiring, esp the original one. As to the interference, that's what I'm afraid of. It's like those shadowing we see on tv when signal bounce off bldg and back. Hopefully those ICE people can help. Anyway, your help is also greatly appreciated. Cheers
Elfenstar 3rd Gear July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 If the ice people can't help, what you could do is get 2 extension wires and join them. one end goes to your HU and each antenna plugs into one of the other 2 ends. If there's interferance, just remove the joined extension and plug the internal antenna direct to the HU. It's trial and error but at least this way everything is reversible without any modifications to the original wiring or internal antenna wiring. Sony 1st Gear July 28, 2006 Author Share July 28, 2006 Cool.. at least when I bring to the shop, I know what to suggest if the ice people dunno what to do.. I always believe in knowing what to do before approaching workshop. at least there's exchange of information rather than go there and let them do what they want. But sadly, I didn't do that when I went and do my spoiler, thus result in the antenna search.
Elfenstar 3rd Gear July 28, 2006 Share July 28, 2006 No worries mate. Its all good. You've got heaps of options on how to do it so you can slowly decide. I don't like cutting up factory stuff and i'm in the middle of making my own 16 pin plug so i can connect my HU to the factory amp no easy task. Even in the diy land of aust, i'm having trouble in finding parts.
Sony 1st Gear July 28, 2006 Author Share July 28, 2006 Ya.. now just need to go and see what changes there is to the spoiler and take it from there...
Wankie Clutched July 28, 2006 Share July 28, 2006 Another technical qns: Can I add in the brosch in car antenna to support a very short antenna which I will have on the outside. Or I have to only use one and cannot combine them. If you use the bosch in car one why do you still want to combine with the outside one? There is only 1 connection to the aerial from you HU, if you plug in the bosch one your external antenna is effectively for show only....
Sony 1st Gear July 28, 2006 Author Share July 28, 2006 In car antenna is usually not as effective as external one.. however, my external have to be as short as 1 inch, thus "performance" is also affected. I was thinking along the line of having 2 to spread the "exposed area" but consideration have to be given for shadowing or the reception being "corrupted" as there's 2 point of reception. Rather technical so my explaination could be wrong ... Any suggestion from you?
Wankie Clutched July 28, 2006 Share July 28, 2006 i think you are making things more complicated but my experience with internal antennas has been the opposite of yours, my old bosch one has better reception than the external one. my 0.02, get an internal antenna or get a smaller spoiler
Sony 1st Gear July 28, 2006 Author Share July 28, 2006 But usually, in-car antenna is weaker compared to external type. May I know what car you are referring to? As for the spoiler, it's actually the location of the car antenna that is causing the problem.. sigh.. like I said previous, Spoiler will have to be up liao.. no turning back
Wankie Clutched July 28, 2006 Share July 28, 2006 used to drive a honda, the internal aftermkt one was better than the stock factory external one. conti cars may have different specs. my friend has changed the external antenna on his alfa from the stock long one (similar to yours) to a shorter 1" one, performance no different. Maybe you can try to look around for those 'better' types, he got his for about $25, the whole thing is metal. ↡ Advertisement
