Robust from breaking they may be, but i'm a belt advocate simply because the chains can stretch over time (i don't know of any non-interferance chain based engine) while belts stretch very little (though they might snap if not changed on time).

Hi all,

Recently I have written to Skoda's Coroporate Communications team. This is the reply which I have received. Not very technical in nature, but should be sufficient to addres the general queries that we have concerning the 1.6 SR and 1.6 MPI powerplants.

Q1. Is the 1.6 SR petrol engine used in the Octavia I same or similar compared to the 1.6 MPI engine in the Octavia II?

A1. The 1.6/74 kW EUII engine used in the Octavia I is similar to the 1.6/75 kW used in the new Octavia (Octavia II).

Q2. Comparing the 2 engine variants, what improvements do we see in the new 1.6 MPI engine?

A2.1 slightly increased output (1 kW)

A2.2 the new emission standard EU4

A2.3 using of the electronic-throttle system

A2.4 change on the cylinder head, engine sump, air distributor system, clutch etc.
