Mkl22 Supersonic July 25, 2006 Share July 25, 2006 a friend just collected her 1.4A Aveo Sdn. it seems that the auto shift gate was changed from the zig zag type to the normal straight type. She was not informed till she saw it when she collected the car. Made some noise, but GM didn't bother and came up with excuses and said it was an improved version. Seems like a case of product misrepresentation. As the car is different from the showroom model. ↡ Advertisement
Vios73 1st Gear July 25, 2006 Share July 25, 2006 Any pic to show the improved version? Seem quite weird to hear this...got my aveo sedan end jun06 but still the zig-zag auto gearshift....very interesting....
Cbx750p 1st Gear July 26, 2006 Share July 26, 2006 The old zig-zag shift gate type have been around for many many years as far as I remembered. There are more move mechanism inside and these would tend to fail faster than a simplified straight shift mechanism. Every modern transmission nowadays, especially the more advance electronic type are adopting the straight shift type. Guess it was a change for the better. I find it much easier to use compared to the more complexed and difficult to use shift gate type ! Zig Zag Shift ( taken from a car parked in my neighbourhood - hope the owner won't mind ) Straight Shift ( from the BoonLay show room where I tested the new shift operation ) CBX
Furrynadz 5th Gear July 26, 2006 Share July 26, 2006 nothin wrong with straight shifters less parts more reliable even high end camry using straight
Huggable Clutched July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 I think there is a disclaimer in the brochue stating that specs might be changed without notice. The SE should inform her prior to the delivery. How did she made noise to GM?
Stary Turbocharged July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 If me, I go for the straight one anytime
X_man_michael Neutral Newbie July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 i think the best still the zig-zag one leh.... for safety purpose... anyway, i drive manual....
Huggable Clutched July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 The ZZ looks more elegant, and should be "safer" due to the double-action required to shift gears. Coupled with the need to push down the knob (for some gears), the awareness of shifting the gears is higher. For the straight one, as long as the button is pressed, you can engage any gear. Skthk Neutral Newbie July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 (edited) Only the outside change ? inside gear box, transmisssion still same ? or really improve overall ? Maybe this batch made in Thailand while "older" one from Korea ? But doesn't Mazda car also zz type ? looks nicer. I didn't know its old design. the zz one on top can get a bit hot, wonder if the new one improve on it. Edited July 27, 2006 by Skthk
Cbx750p 1st Gear July 27, 2006 Share July 27, 2006 If you know how to drive the auto, you would prefer the straight type. The Zig Zag one very laychay ! Must shift left and right and forward & backward ! The straight type have button/switch on the top of the stick which can bring the shift out of PARK when brake is depressed. Bring it down to D and there it would stay. Move it forward, it goes into N and no further ! Press the button again and can shift it down to 1 or 2 or 3 ! No need to shift left or right like the Gate Type ! Normal folks would prefer the Straight Shift. CBX
Spango Clutched July 28, 2006 Share July 28, 2006 Strange... When I bought my Chevy, my SE was telling me the zig-zag is a new design, and straight ones are old school... Think they can twist and turn as they like...

Spango Clutched July 30, 2006 Share July 30, 2006 Yar... My zig-zag gear is even older that the one you have in your photo... The covering is made of plastic instead of metal...
Vios73 1st Gear July 30, 2006 Share July 30, 2006 Did GM upgrade with gear indicator onboard with the new straight gear gate? If not, i would say the zigzag is a good guage without looking at the gear indicator on gate itself. Sometimes the stright might just overshot the D drive.... Huggable Clutched July 30, 2006 Share July 30, 2006 I believe the cover is still made of plastic, just that it's sprayed silver.
Huggable Clutched July 30, 2006 Share July 30, 2006 Even for the ZZ shiftgate, there is an indicator on the dash (using 7-segment display IIRC) to show the engaged gear. The only difference is that it's not the typical light-up indicator.
Glyuen 3rd Gear July 30, 2006 Share July 30, 2006 the straight one looks more elegant and easier to operate..not worth the trouble to chnage it to zz type...

(camry is not in this category[lipsrsealed]) uses the gated shift type.. which is the almost the same as the zig zag type. Once u get used to the action, and learn how to fully utilise it, there is no such thing as thinking of shifting left or right, putting the car to D, N and P is accomplished in one action. Makes it even more convienient than the straight shift type. And with added safety too. ie. you would never miss the D gear, and the 3,2,1 would have to be accomplished step by step, eliminates the possibility of accidently shifting to 1 when what u want is 2. Yup u are right, normal folks who have not really driven the zig zag shift type (I don't mean just trying out once or twice) would of surely prefer the straight shift type. However many would prefer the gated shift type after they have really owned and driven a zigzag gate type. But again its up to personal preference lar.. ↡ Advertisement
