Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 12, 2006 Share June 12, 2006 sifu, i am having Alpine : Component SPX-177R Peak Power: 300W RMS Power: 75W Frequency Response: 35Hz - 60kHz Subwoofer SWR-1222D Power Handling (Peak): 1500W Power Handling (RMS): 500W Frequency Response: 24Hz - 500Hz Nominal Impedance: 2Ohm+2Ohm Just dont know which amp is suitable to power them. I`m going into SQ, if i will allocated S$700 for a 4-channel amp to drive the front and sub, which amp can be in my list? my HU got no RCA output, and because it is on dashboard HU and with steering remote control, so i will not change the HU. Due to this, the amp with speaker level input will be my choice. else, i will need a RCA converter for the amp rite? could it cause cancelation of HU signal? at first thinking of Alpine MRV-545, but ppl say Alpine amp is bit bright and not suitable for SPX-177R, don know what they mean. And, it is not speaker level input amp. and regarding amp, that SPX-177R frequensy respond is 35Hz-60KHz, if my amp which is having of frequency respond of 50Hz-30KHz, is it not suitable? ↡ Advertisement
Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 13, 2006 Author Share June 13, 2006 after i gone thru some posting in other ICE forum, some ppl advice that to use a 2-channel amp for front comp and a mono amp to feed for the sub, will it be the better setup if compare to a 4-channel amp to power all the front comp and sub? if so, i am having a budget of S$400 for the 2-channel and S$300 for the mono amp, any brand and model will be in my list? i'm a newbie in ICE, really worry of wrong investment due to buying wrong ICE setup and need to re-setup. About amp, i have heard about some name, Alpine, Mohawk, Helix, Soundstream, Infinity, Lightning, JBL, DSL, but don know how is their performance and grade, are they within my budget? Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 13, 2006 Author Share June 13, 2006 ya, i also cant affort for expensive and high-end stuffs. i'm budget of S$700 for amp, i have choosen for Alpine comp SPX-177R n Type R sub. Going to passive setup. Now the headache thing is the amp choice which i'm in doubt. i'm not going to loud and big bass punch or SPL music, i always listen soft music and soft vocal, so looking for soft and mellow SQ sound, hope my explaination not confusing u all. K2000 Neutral Newbie June 14, 2006 Share June 14, 2006 a bit constraint on the budget, if you dont mind used amp, i think you can look for them. get a 100W x 2 amp, and another monoblock or any 2channel amp that output 500W bridged. the last thing is i think you should get the SWR-1242 insted of the 1222, cause most amp can handle 2 ohm but not all can handle 1 ohm, even they do, it will be more heat and distortion. Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 my friend suggest me to take SWR-1222D 2ohm+2ohm instead of 1242D 4ohm+4ohm, because not all amp stable at 2ohm, so with that 2ohm+2ohm series connection, will be better solution to most amp with 4ohm stable, i still not so understand fully why, anyone can explain? he also suggest me to use a at least 100W RMS 2-channel amp for the front comp and a at least 400W RMS mono amp for the 12" sub, i think he give me a good advice, am i right? Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 yesterday went to Leader Auto at Sim Avenue, was qouted for full Alpine setup : Front Comp, 6.5" SPX-177R 75W RMS 12" Sub, SWR-1222D 500W RMS 2-channel amp, MRV-T420 110W x2 RMS mono amp, MRD-M605 400W x1 RMS are they a good combination for SQ (at my entry level as a newbie in ICE) ? asked about my stock HU problem which has no RCA output, he suggest me use hi-lo converter, he claim that there will be no signal cancelation as ppl say outside, how true is him? that S$17 converter, so good mer? anyone used before? K2000 Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Share June 15, 2006 amp suppose to output double power at 2 ohm comparing to 4 ohm, but usually less than double, if you are using class D monoblock, dont worry it will not stable at 2ohm, cause it is designed to give more power and also low impendance, most of them happy to be 2 ohm loaded, even 1 ohm for good one. i agree 100W to 150W for your front will be good, actually alpine do have a monoblock designed to use with type R, and i think it is MRD-M605, check this out. Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 yup, was qouted the MRD-M605 to power my SWR-1222D.
K2000 Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Share June 15, 2006 then get the 1242 loh, dont waste your amp, it will be happy to stay 2ohm at 600W[laugh]
Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 really? the M605 can hapily match with SWR-1242D? the how is the connection for 1242 to M605? dual voice coil connect to how many ohm, paraller or series?
Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 just applied some ohms calculation, for DVC 4ohm+4ohm : in series connection ; R = R1 + R2 = 4 + 4 = 8 ohms in parallel connection ; 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2 R = 2 ohms for DVC 2ohm+2ohm : in series connection ; R = 2 + 2 = 4 ohms in parallel connection ; 1/R = 1/2 + 1/2 R = 1 ohm i understand that, mostly ppl use two setup, DVC 4ohm+4ohm in parallel to 2ohms or DVC 2ohm+2ohm in series to 4ohms, actually what is the main different between this two setup? is it for SQ or SPL concern? Ivan0507 Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Share June 15, 2006 bro,the alpine MRD-M605 amp is not stable at 1 ohm.so the best is get the dvc 4 ohm sub,to get a 2ohm load for the amp.(SWR-1242D) alpine mono amp is actually underated ,is more on SQ amp.if you tune it rite.will give u a very good bass for your set up. K2000 Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Share June 15, 2006 very easy, connect your 1242 dual 4 ohm, parallel them to 2ohm, amp will give you 600W at 2ohm

The hi-lo converter thing only $17 bucks ? An audioshop ever sold me one at $50, but some brand stuff (starting with s something), transparent cover, got some adjustable knob ... then later in another audioshop the owner gave me another for free, a black piece w/o any adjustable knob ... I guess both should work the same lah
Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 ok, i have changed my mind, instead of getting 1222D, i will go for 1242D DVC 4ohm, thanks bro for ur advice.
Kelvinw Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Author Share June 15, 2006 (edited) that S$17 converter is a simple converter, 2 RCA output without adjustable knob. after surf at Alpine web, got this one, think to go for this one instead of brand cheap converter Edited June 15, 2006 by Kelvinw
Hungee Neutral Newbie June 15, 2006 Share June 15, 2006 wow .. the one looks impressive .. bet the price tag is impressive too the wiring with connectors are neat, as compare to mine, the wires need to be black-taped ... also heard got 2V & 4V type ... ↡ Advertisement
