Caught this at Borneo Motors showroom over the weekend.

Notice how the rubber at the bottom of the vertical line has warped.

This is a BRAND NEW unused Vios!!!

hey vit,

No la, this not really like rubber warp... maybe cos its showroom car, suffered alot of man-handling and itchy fingers. So likely not a QC issue.

Rubber quality or securing issues result in shrinkage first. especially those long seals around inside of doors which go quite a long distance. They shrink, then they fall out of place cos the fasteners can't hold them anymore.

So hard to say la. I think nowadays, tomyum productions are getting into shape. Like it or not, they'll be under stringent scrutiny of the Japanese bosses. Afterall Toyota has a reputation to maintain, whether its made by Japanese or Thais.

Hi Panda,

I beg to differ if you are considering that Japanese bosses impose the most stringent scrutiny. If you have a good close look at the left doors of the olive green Lexus IS 250 in Leng Kee, you will be able to notice the mismatch in levels of the front and rear doors. The gaps of the panels on this Lexus have also widened compared to the previous IS 200.

The SE who attended to me concurred my findings and remarked that a few customers have voiced similar concerns to her too.

If the current Lexus are only capable of such build and finishing quality, what more about the Thai and Malaysian assembled Toyotas?

I think that the Vios is positioned as a budget car, and is priced as such. Thus, one would not expect the highest quality of finishings that come with a significantly more expensive car that is not made in SEA.

but its rival the city at least has better rubber linings on the window frame. even the rubber strips at the glass panel has smaller gaps compared to the altis and the vios.

again i think its due to your luck but i think that the city has better quality standards since its still sold in japan as the fit aria.

Yes, I agree that Vios is a budget car. In this segment, the potential rivals of the Vios are the Hyundai Verna & Getz, Kia Rio. At least, these cars have better finishing compared to the Vios in my opinion.

All good things must come to an end. High Profits, Low Costs- Overpriced products with underpriced goods is becoming a norm, now looks like even Nippon made will be on the blocks soon. Goods are build not to last anymore.

True, but the City also costs more than the Vios.

City in actual fact did not cost more than vios. City idsi OMV is higher by 2-3K and parf will be higher. factoring in the superb FC of city that resulted in fuel savings, CT is actually cheaper in the long run. and CT is more spacious in cabin/boot space, therefore it make economical sense to spent the extra for a better quality city. of course the downside is CT's weird shape

I have no doubt abt Toyota poor QC having owned a Soluna b4. the only thing good is the engine and gearbox.

Stock to stock, a City handles better too. But unfortunately I have to disagree with the FC issue. The City doesn't have the miraculously high FC that many people seem to think it has. Real world FC for my colleague who drives an 04 iDSi City is 15-16km/l while my 04 Vios is doing 16-18km/l, both MT cars. Of course this also depends a lot on the driver, but the point still remains that the Vios FC isn't actually worse than the City's.

Yes the City has better cabin and boot space, but personally, I hated the look for the i-DSi City's interior. The VTEC City's interior was much better. Unfortunately all that is overridden by the fugly exterior of the car.

Also, why is everyone getting on Toyota's case for QC issues? My colleague's City has had far larger issues than my Vios so far. At least my Vios doesn't have wind entering the cabin at high speeds. The only problem I've had with it is that the rear driver-side passenger door isn't perfectly aligned with the front driver door (it's off by about 1mm), and yes I had the door rubber moulding replaced as well because it came loose. On the other hand, my colleague's City's clutch pedal recently came loose and was rattling in the cabin whenever the car went over bumps. Imagine if the brake pedal came loose?? He's also had to replace the gearbox last year (though still under warranty) though I don't know the specifics of the mechanical failure, he mentioned that he couldn't engage the 2nd, 4th and reverse gears fully.

Point is, both are Thai-made cars, but only 1 is a Thai-priced car. Just because you don't see Thai-QC in one car doesn't mean that it's not there.

Short bonnet and boots are the in thing now apparently. What bothers me are the tail lights that look like they tried to copy the Skyline, but gave up halfway, leaving a nice curvy top and a flat bottom.
