Optraman Neutral Newbie August 29, 2006 Share August 29, 2006 Hi, Have been reading threads on GPS for car navigating as I am interested in getting one. After reading so many threats, i am still confuse on the wide choices of GPS and the equiment needed. Can any kind soul care to recomend a suitable GPS ... What i have gather after reading : Stand alone GPS units like Garmin, Tibo etc is easy to use and accurate with street name search functions and Audio voice guide, which is very good. I prefer a standalone unit solely for nagvigation purpose, Too Bad only have Singapore Map and Johore Map only. As I do travel to Malaysia, I need map of Whole Malaysia as well. Anyone know any standalone GPS units come with both Sing and Malaysia Maps .....? Another Option is to use PDA phone or pocket PC connected with GPS receiver, maps can be downloaded from internet, but heard it is difficult to use and operate ??? If i choose this option, What are the hardware/software needed and which Branded of hardware is good ?? Thanks in advance
Sparrowang Neutral Newbie August 30, 2006 Share August 30, 2006 Personally, to choose a suitable GPS, I am looking for the following: a. Screen must be big (high resolution), since I am using while driving b. Must be touch screen, easy entry c. Voice Navigation/Guidance d. Frequently used maps are constantly update and easily available e. Inexpensive setup As for the accuracy, well it really depend on where your GPS or its antenna goes. The solar films in our car does some effect on the range of GPS accuracy. And do you really need pin-point accuracy? As for me, my choice is clear. Since I already have an Acer N30, I just get a Holux GPSlim236 GPS and using Garmin Que software with latest Malaysia/Singapore Maps, my total setup was only around SG$200. Actually, not difficult to setup. Garmin Que might seems difficult for first time user, but once you understand it
Guyver 1st Gear August 30, 2006 Share August 30, 2006 Hi..... a. High resolution is NOT equal to big screen ... you can see alot of very high resolution MP4 player screen but the screen size is not that big. For you ... what you want should be big screen. b. Touch screen would be a standard for PDA type GPS system. c. I believe that is standard also. d. For the map part, if you want it be be update constantly and easily then you'll have to pay premium for it. e. How much is inexpensive? So you already have a GPS setup liao .... Syshi Neutral Newbie August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 Bro.. For Malsingmaps, the update of maps roughly will be weekly... cover many area from Sin to Malaysia... got link to other countries too... I managed to brought it to Bangkok without problem... Most important, the update and maps are free... Just need to get the Hardware for the GPS...
Syshi Neutral Newbie August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 How about IPAQ 6828? Can it be installed with such navigator? Bro.. Any PDA with bluetooth, can we upgraded to be GPS...Just get a GPS Bluetooth Receiver (Hardware) For the Software, just get the program and maps from www.malsingmaps.com... Most important, it is free and updated periodically (weekly or more) as comparted to those paid which will be updated yearly... As mentioned, the downside will be no postal code searching for the free version as compared to the paid version..
Syshi Neutral Newbie August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 How much did you pay for it? Anyway, do these map software contain information about junctions which forbid right turns, etc? How intelligent is the route adviser? Most of the GPS software /maps will be able to route our trips (advise turning, etc..). For accuracy wise, will be dependent on the map algorithm... we can contribute to the malsingmaps by letting them know any error observed in the map.. Anyway, as this GPS software/maps not linked to the local traffic condition, sometimes the advise is not very good (can't avoid traffic jams, etc). It will be standard routing given (shorter distance, faster times, avoid highways, etc)
Guyver 1st Gear August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 This Malsingmaps is free? Get from where?
Syshi Neutral Newbie August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 www.malsingmaps.com Follow the steps to install in the wiki.. Basically you will need: 1. PatchIMG (Free) - This is to combine maps into 1 image files to be use for the map 2. GPS Proxy (Free) - This is to interface the GPS receiver with your PDA (if separate receiver and PDA) 3. Garmin Que (Copyrighted - but can use free) - This is to display the maps accordingly and routing... it can have voice navigation too...quite useful... 4. Maps (Free) - contribution of the people in malsingmaps (MALaysia-SINGapore-MAPS). So, if you go many place often, can help to contribute. Some of the maps also build in the speed traps. Anyway, at the moment, some of them doing the project to incorporate the postal code into the maps (work in progress)...
Optraman Neutral Newbie August 31, 2006 Share August 31, 2006 If you can fork out more, I would strongly suggest to go for Garmin products because of their reliability and wide range of products. But bear in mind, you must also feel comfortable with their application. One drawback as compare to other GPS application is that, the lack of details (block nos, postal code and its searches and 3D effect). Garmin might have the new features, but not available on the require maps. Thanks[/reply] Does Garmin products comes with Malaysia Maps ??? My understanding is that it only have maps up to Johor only. Others function such as lack of details is no issue to me. Just need to know to go to destination by road name search will do.
