I'm quite taken by old Alfas from the late 60's to 70's, namely the Giulias and the GT 1300/1600s and have some questions.

1) Does anyone have any idea how I could go about finding a good example here and approx. how much it would cost?

2) Can it be registered as a normal everyday car instead of a vintage one?

3) Would maintaining one be a real pain-in-the-ass or relatively acceptable? Am referring to both the financial and time aspects.

4) Finally, would it even make sense owning one here? [laugh]

Sorry for so many questions, would be great if anyone could share more in-depth info about these cars with me as well. I've very interested to learn more about them!

Cheers [;)]

1) i jus saw a spider at the autobahn shop...he quote abt 40k+ but i think can neg.

2)i really dun tink so

3)i feel mus have couple of thousands to restore rather than maintain...old cars are simply built so i dun foresee maintenance to be very high...sm1 with a classic car can help here

4)def yes if its a second car, but as the only car of cos not since u got restricted driving hrs

mayb can get a dirt cheap kia and offset with a nice old alfa eh

I love those cars too.

If you're looking at getting one theres this shop at bukit timah rd towards little india just after the newton roundabout(just before the slip road to the cte). I used to go there to look, look, see see before i got my licence [laugh] Just checked in feb and the shop is still there.

Biggest problem is rust, esp in the boot, under the wheel arches and under the door sills. If you find any with rust removed i say get it. Same issues but worse with the old fiats and slightly better with the MG's. FOr the alfas, some models have gearbox issues, and one has seats that may have flattenned over time (literally).

If you know of any engine or gearbox rebuilding places in m'sia or singapore along with a body restoration place, i say go get one cheap and get them to do it.

Also if you can get one in VGC for a good price, i would say go for it!!!

Edit: thats right... the shop is directly opposite the temp newton hawker centre

3rd Gear

there used to be 1 silver GT1600 (limited production, one of the 500 if I remember correctly) wth Aluminium body, all panels are rivet together (not welded) so no problem about body rusting, not sure if it's still on the road wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif

My brother used to own a Sky Blue one. It was in pretty good condition.

As it's more than 25 years old... Dun need to wear seat belts..... as The original car was manufactured without seatbelts. But seatbelts were installed later lah...

Think my bro deregistered his car... Dunno if he scrapped it or sold it....

I used to have a 1300 GT Junior .

very expensive maintenance.

rust problem every few years

it was a gem to drive

spent $25,000 for rebuild, considered reasonable in those days in the 80s

changed almost every part including dashboard and meters, window winders, petrol tank,

reupholster, rewiring, respray

car became too small for my family and it became a second car.

eventually sold it off as didnt drive it for more than a year.

it was a very unique, sexy car

You're referring to Autobahn. Yeah lots of brilliant cars there, once I saw this caucasian woman test driving the old Spider nearby. Now thats another sweet Alfa, though I'd still prefer a Giulia or GT.

Any idea what owning one in Melbourne would cost? If I can't have one here, maybe I could get 1 there in a couple of years. Though thinking about it, unless I could do repairs etc on it myself or have a mechanic friend, might not be such a good idea with the cost of labour there [sweatdrop]

It would depend on the condition, the gt1600 is roughly 10-18k depending on condition, but parts etc would be cheaper here. labour isnt that bad here. still cheaper than dealer prices back home. but if you're coming here for studies i feel that its going to be too time consuming to diy a restoration.

"4) Finally, would it even make sense owning one here?"

Hi! there, Decibel,

There're quite a few GT/GTVs on the roads, most of them are driven daily.

Maintenance is on the high side, due to the rust problems, mechanically, it's not a problem, or a parts issue as there're still a lot of parts suppliers around the world, including Melbourne.

I'm in the Alfa Classics group here in SG, if there's a meet, I'll contact you.

You might want to go to Alfa City at Sin Ming, take a look at the cars being restored there, and you might meet some of the owners on Saturdays.

All these cars are meant to be run, not parked in the garage.

Rgds

Hi Paul, thanks for the info! Will remember to pop by if I'm in the area. Could I perhaps leave my contact number with you? Would really love to go down and have a look-see when they meet up! Cheers [;)]

Hahaha I don't know much about old Alfas, but am I right to assume there are all sorts of performance mods that you can do to their engines which even the authorities wouldn't understand upon visual inspection? [sly]
