Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Share March 21, 2006 Hi people I am kind of new to car audio and have faced several problems and felt that my money spent on my system is not up to standard... I am currently driving a 2006 Volvo s40 and the HU cannot be changed... thus I have to use a hi-low adapter tap from the original Volvo speaker cable to convert to RCA for my amp... I have installed the following components and how it is being run to my speakers. 1 Nakamichi PA-2004 four channel amp bridge to two channel for my front speaker which is Boston acoustic pro 60 component 1 Nakamichi PA-2002 two channel amp for my rear speaker which is Nakamichi sp-s6500 component 1 Nakamichi PA-2004 four channel amp bridge to two channels for my two Nakamichi 10" sp-w1000d subwoofer. Currently I am facing two problems... 1. My front imaging is lost from the original Volvo speaker... now my pro60 sound very separated and no frontal image. 2. No matter how I tune the phase for my woofer on the amp I still can hear the woofer is clearly coming from the back... again no front imaging of the bass... All component speaker is being installed in the factory location of my volvo which front and rear originally was componet... My installer tells me I need to get a pre-amp (either an active x-over or an equalizer) which I have yet gotten... I would like to hear some expert opinion before purchasing anymore equipment as I have already over spend on my equipment listed here... I was thinking if it was the hi-low adapter being used by my installer is not a good quality one and changing the adapter will improve the sound staging... Would really appreciate all you brothers at the forum's help here... ↡ Advertisement
Diy_boy Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Share March 21, 2006 Hi, Your lack of imaging is probably due to front/rear speakers being out of phase. A high quality Hi-Lo convertor only helps you get better resolution but cannot help with imaging. Do you have the centre speaker in the s60 ? if yes, is it still connected ? if not, connecting back will help with imaging.
Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Author Share March 21, 2006 hi... i have already double check and tried different phase for the speaker and it still sound the same... and sorry i am not driving a s60... i am driving a s40 and does not have centre speaker... Diy_boy Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Share March 21, 2006 looks like you need to go to another installer to seek another opinion. I think you should check your phase using a phase checker
Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Author Share March 21, 2006 do you know which shop hsa this phase checker thing?
K2000 Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Share March 21, 2006 try to disconnect your rear speaker or adjust at the HU to "shutdown" the rear speaker, sometimes amplifying rear speaker can spoilt the soundstage in front. and you lack of mid bass, can be the speaker characteristics that dont have much mid bass, or did you sound proof the door? getting a pre-amp/ active xover may be helpful, so you can do some tuning to your system. Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Author Share March 21, 2006 my rear speaker is very minimal.... is like nearly nothing... the thing is i doubt it is the rear speaker spoiling the image... the front is like i have no image... just sound like left and right is seperated.. no centre image... and i did not sound proof the whole door... only around the speaker... K2000 Neutral Newbie March 21, 2006 Share March 21, 2006 how long you have installed the system? the speaker may need some times to run-in before it sound good, even without pre-amp, i dont think the sound should sound like left and right is seperated. Wankie Clutched March 22, 2006 Share March 22, 2006 changing your hi-lo converter or adding a pre-amp/eq will not help imho. did your s60 come with a factory amplifier? are your other amp connections through this amp? a bit difficult to explain in writing lah, maybe u can drop by the wed night meetups and let the boys help you out. Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 22, 2006 Author Share March 22, 2006 oh ok... where is the meet up location? is it tonight? my car is not with me now... when will be the next meetup?
Ae86 Neutral Newbie March 23, 2006 Share March 23, 2006 Are the front speakers producing enough mid bass if there is not enough mid bass the woofer will sound like coming from the back because volvo has thick sheet metal body moreover it's a new car the sound insulation is very new and effective you can feel the vibration of the woofer but you can't feel the thump. Are the passive x-over connected to the speakers and does the amp have any high pass or low pass filter or onboard x-over? Sometimes the installer may have set these filters wrongly.
Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 23, 2006 Author Share March 23, 2006 I feel that it does produce enough mid bass and i can feel enough thump from the woffer...but what is missing is soundstaging and woofer sounded like it is coming from the back... all both my front and rear have passive crossover and... and my front speaker is set to high pass at 66, rear is set to high pass at 80 and woofer at low pass at about 70... I am currently driving a 2006 Volvo s40 and the HU cannot be changed... thus I have to use a hi-low adapter tap from the original Volvo speaker cable to convert to RCA for my amp... You don't sound like new to audio as mentioned some terms unless those terms were what the installer told so. When mentioned about tapping of sound, you mean the output from speaker were converted to plug into the input to your amp ? Are there no audio out from the HU ? If above answers are yes, could be why you can't get the effect.
Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 23, 2006 Author Share March 23, 2006 haha... well i am not new to audio... i used to play audio equipment in my room but my dad complaining that i have been making too much noise so i moved to car audio as he will not hear the noise haha... get what i mean... well nowadays cars hu cannot be change and yes i tap from speaker cable... and i doubt my hu can be removed... PS... this is really the first equipment that i have used... previously was in my mum's family car but now i got my own so moved it... but the pro60 and one of the naka 4ch is new... Ae86 Neutral Newbie March 24, 2006 Share March 24, 2006 Have you try changing the setting of the high pass for the front speakers to 160-250 hz range? Sometimes the lack of lower midrange frequencies tends to narrow the stage width.Try to tune your front speakers emphasising more on the vocals ant the rear speakers more on instruments.By the way where are the tweeters mounted?
Coolnil Neutral Newbie March 24, 2006 Author Share March 24, 2006 isn't the setting you recommended is higher then my current setting meaning will have less mid range right? correct me if i am wrong... and what you think i should set for my rear?
Ae86 Neutral Newbie March 25, 2006 Share March 25, 2006 your front speakers are set at 66hz so can it be that the lower frequency range of the front speakers cancels out with the woofer frequency.Try lowering the gain of your rear speakers' amp until you can bearly notice the sound coming out from the speakers.By the way where are your front tweeters mounted on?
