Recon power steering

my power steering is experiencing a slight leak...monthly top-up of ATF is around $5.

my mechanic recommends a recon power steering...together with labour costs $280....is this on the high side or ok?

is it worth changing? my car is a 15 yr old car, im afraid any "surgery" it might experience "complications" [sweatdrop]

tried power steering repair fluid from STP...only slowed down the leak.....

in your opinion isit worth it?

do you plan to keep the car for long?

I used to have that problem...

It all started when I changed fluid, and when the mechanic tighten back, some how, the o-ring was demaged... in the end. he helped to 'glue' up the joint.

1991 Nissan Presea.

i think the power steering is a reconditioned piece from the scrapyard as this car is out of production [sweatdrop]

check with nissan first. many of their parts are interchangeable units (e.g. the power steering rack for the 1989 CA18DET 180sx is exactly the same unit as the 2002 S15 silvia...)

Supercharged

had such surgery done on my previous ride. due to the previous owner extreme high mileage (1yr+ 60,000) when we took over, the power steering leaks & we went to TC.

TC wanted to charge $1.4k plus warranty for labour for 3mth. we sourced around & got the recon part plus labour for less than $350. that was in yr 2000. after surgery the car was good as new.

can't say whether worth yr while as i dunno yr intentions.

hmm....so i guess $280 is not so exp....

the thing im wondering about is if it's even worth it....i top up $5 fluid per month...$280 divided by $5 means i can top up for 4.5 years [sweatdrop]

the next thing im wondering is if such surgery actually might cause more problems for such an old car....old car + new parts = problems....just like how an old man goes for surgery n never recovers [dizzy]

any comments? all welcome [laugh]

I also had a leaking PS but solved the problem when I used RP PS fluid to top up. Used up a couple of bottles in about a year & the leak slowly went away.

Prob due to the rubber seals shrunk & hardened due to age but the RP ATF sofened & expanded the seals so now it's OK.

Give it a try if u use Dexron ATF. But 1st check if all the rubber hoses r pushed in tight as 1 might have worked loose & just needs to b pushed back, or a dishonest mech pulled it loose during your last servicing. [sly]

If that cannot work, get a re-con PS pump from the scrap yards & get a good mech to install for you. Sud cost less than $280.

BTW, my car is 17 y.o with abt 370,000 km on the clock.
