Alveron2001 Neutral Newbie March 4, 2006 Share March 4, 2006 Hi all.. See alot of Octy fans and experts here.... Recently became a small convert after I went down for a test drive.... NICE !!! Understand that there is a Vento engine with 75hp and the current Tour is using a Bora engine with 102bhp. Would like to ask a question to the experts here.... Which year did the Octavia switch to the newer Bora engine ? So if I buy a 2nd hand 2004/2005 1.6A Ambiente. Which engine will have ??? I think the Bora Engine is better than the Vento ??? Any comments from Bros here ? ↡ Advertisement
Anakin Clutched March 4, 2006 Share March 4, 2006 (edited) 1.6 Ambiente should be with the newer engine. 1.6 classic version came with the 75bhp one. they were sold along side each other quite early on. when i was on the market for a new car in 2001, they were selling side by side: classic went for $69k+ & ambiente was $84k+!!! Fortress Clutched March 4, 2006 Share March 4, 2006 Not too sure about which year did the Bora engine came about but I understand that since 2002, there is an Ambiente. I am driving a Classic, Vento engine, though the Bora engine is sweeter and have more torque, in my view, the car lacks power as a whole and in the RS case, the chassis cannot take the engine. Hence power doesn't matter. However, to me the Classic/Vento engine is more economical(please check the reviews), cost less, very basic, most importantly, it is simple to maintain, hence cheaper to repair too. Therefore, price is different as mention way back in 2001 and 2002 ... Yes you are right. If purchase it in 2004 or 05, it will be bora engine ... If you have the budget, get the Tour. If not, opt for used Octy Ambiente which I believe there ain't much in the market ...
Alveron2001 Neutral Newbie March 6, 2006 Author Share March 6, 2006 Yeah.. Decided try it out over the other 50-60K choices... So far tried. - Lancer - City - Vios - Sunny - Altis - Tucson - Verna - Optra Was going to settle for Lancer... But then tried the Tour, and even my wife say "Let's get this" after test-drive. Sigh... Lancer to Tour is $9k more.....

PointyEwe Clutched March 6, 2006 Share March 6, 2006 A second hand Octavia may be more expensive than a new one. I'm driving a manual classic coming to its 6th year soon (in 6 mths' time). My experience with the Vento engine is that it is really economical to maintain as mentioned by Fortress. Great fuel consumption plus servicing at every 15k with cheap cxxxxxe oil ($30). Too bad the timing belt needs to be changed at 60k km compared to Ambiente. Have been pondering for the last few months whether to change new car or not as the Octavia had been really reliable so far.
Lightspeed Clutched March 6, 2006 Share March 6, 2006 Hahaha... I was sold after the test drive too The rest of the cars in my list were struck off in an instance
Fortress Clutched March 7, 2006 Share March 7, 2006 Did a few check on the timing belt issue, in UK and also with an SE who has left CA, the Classic timing belt is adviced to change at 90,000 km instead of 60,000km. Hope it is not one of those events where the mechanic tell users that if you don't do it, it will break while you drive and will cost you a huge amount. PointyEwe Clutched March 7, 2006 Share March 7, 2006 What I heard from Servo is: 90k timing belt change for Bora engine. 60k timing belt change for Vento engine. They were quoting from some skoda service manual it seemed.

Fortress Clutched March 7, 2006 Share March 7, 2006 Understand from the Skoda guys in UK is the following, 120k timing belt change for Bora engine. 90k timing belt change for Vento engine. Interesting.

Zizou 1st Gear March 8, 2006 Share March 8, 2006 Understand from the Skoda guys in UK is the following, 120k timing belt change for Bora engine. 90k timing belt change for Vento engine. Fortress Clutched March 8, 2006 Share March 8, 2006 (edited) I am also very curious too. As I read from my Classic's manual, it elude to 90,000 km but was not specific. Got a chance to see a Vento engine maunal, it says 90,000km. Check with the UK Skoda guys and also the manual from Stamford(one that is generic type), which was doing my servicing the last round, it says 90,000km for Classic. Finally, understand that many mechanics advised and "probably" right(note the quotation), that all Octavias need to change timing belt at 30,000km before the mileage is up due to the "wear and Tear" of Singapore start stop driving. Now my concern are, why 30,000km, am sure Skoda or VW has done more homework and why only Singapore, understand London driving is worse off then us. I also doubt that there is a study on why 30,000km is the bench mark. My 39 months old Classic is on it 83,000km and has not has it timing belt change. Can you imagine,as a mechanic, if you change a third earlier, you make 50% more. On the other hand, how many will actually have his timing belt breaks, before the time is up.....interesting.
