Sotong_kia Neutral Newbie February 5, 2006 Share February 5, 2006 Mine they told me need to change rack too.. and still waiting for parts.. Mine is I can hear occassional "squeking" sound.. very very soft.. only my super-sensitive-to-car-noise ears can hear it.. Other than that, no problems with steering, didn't feel different. Cbx750p 1st Gear February 5, 2006 Share February 5, 2006 My 2 year old Optra developed the squeaking noise about 2 months back. Complained to SA about this and told that stock of the rack is out and would be informed when to come back for a change once the rack is in. Strangely, the last couple of weeks, the noise is gone ! Funny but the squeaking noise is gone ! Usually get it when the car is warm and making turns at slower speed, i.e. in the car park or on the road. Cannot explain this when they have the rack ready. They will test the vehicle prior to the change and when they cannot find the noise, they will not change it for sure. Maybe it is a blessing....at least they would not be striping down my car ! Kevky03 Neutral Newbie February 6, 2006 Share February 6, 2006 Same here. When I sent it for servicing in Oct last year, they said they have changed it but the noise came back after a few days. Very irritating. The service personnel told me that they might even have a recall because of this problem. Had the car for 1.5 years, feel like giving up on the car. Bigfoot Neutral Newbie February 6, 2006 Share February 6, 2006 Does the knocking affect your steering as in it knocks on the steering making it hard to turn? I have a low hissing noise when i turn the wheel at stationary and at very low speeds... This sound came with the car since the first day I got the car. (its 1 year old already) I asked the SE and the service people and they all say its like that one... But in any case, the test drive cars also have this sound, furthermore it does not affect the steering of the car at all, so I thought it is really normal... Wonder if its the same problem u guys facing?? Cuz I also feel like going to SA ask them change the rack...
Kopikao Neutral Newbie February 7, 2006 Share February 7, 2006 The hissing sound should be the power steering working... quite loud...
Sotong_kia Neutral Newbie February 7, 2006 Share February 7, 2006 Yes, the hissing sound is normal, and is more audible when you reach the steering lock limits.. I think that is the sound of the power steering..
Lappy Neutral Newbie February 7, 2006 Author Share February 7, 2006 the knocking dun really affect the function, works as normal only that i'll feel a knock when i turn the steering left or right...Very uncomfortable,,feels like a lorry when u turn it goes tac tac tac tac, although only one tac on my car but

Bigfoot Neutral Newbie February 7, 2006 Share February 7, 2006 ok, have you seeked outside workshop opinion? maybe its not the steering rack fault in that case.. maybe something else... hopefully it won't get worse. steering problems dun play play... Bigfoot Neutral Newbie February 7, 2006 Share February 7, 2006 yup i thought so too... so my 'problem' should be different than the problem lappy's facing? hopefully i dun get this problem on my optra too, but somehow i think its a matter of time only as i also kena much of the problems that all the bros here mention about... Cbx750p 1st Gear February 8, 2006 Share February 8, 2006 (edited) You should only get the tac sound once every time you change your direction of turn. This noise is created because there is a clearance between the steering pinion and steering rack ! The noise is created by the slack between the two direction because of the clearance ! Normally, this noise can be eliminated if the clearance is reduced by adjusting the thrust bearing behind the steering rack. Most steering rack have this feature. Wonder if SA is doing this for you ! If you are getting the tac tac tac noise every time you turning your steering in one direction, then it could not be coming from the steering rack. Something else is wrong ! Maybe something under the chassis is threatening to give way and warning you with the tac tac tac noise ! You better send it in soon !
