What's so special about a conti car's brake pads that it emmits so much brake dust?

Why can't conti cars use the Jap brake pads that do not emit so much brake dust?

I am referring to conti cars in general.

I was told it has got to do with the compound used in the conti cars' brake pads.

So what's this special compound?

conti cars are generally heavier... so to have effective braking, they use dustier, softer pads to haul the car down... better than hard pads and worn rotors...

pad change intervals are sooner than jap cars too...

Kia Cerato at 1275kg is also very heavy for a 1.6l car, but the brake dust is not so bad like conti car, eg, Renault Megane 1.6 which weighs at least 100kg less.

nothing so special.. just that conti cars brake pads do not use any asbestos material like those in jap cars hence the amount of brake dust.. asbestos has been proven to be a cancer causing agent and guess the conti car manufacturers are trying to steer clear of any asbestos lawsuits..

My observation is that Conti Cars have large rotors, thus large brake pads in general. Moreover, if I'm not wrong, the color of the brake dust is different as well. Japanese ones are more like reddish whereas Conti ones are charcoal color.... [laugh]

When I upgraded the brakes on my Teg, the same amount of brake dust also appears for my Honda as does the E200K.

So really, it's the material and brake kit design. The higher performance brakes seem to generate more, somehow.

hi all,

yes, I do agree that with the Green thing which is big in Europe. All the car manufacturers are steering clear of all hazardous materials..

wouldn't harder pads wear out faster due to more friction between pad and rotor? at least that's what i've been told..

where there is friction needed to stop a vehicle, something has to give way... wouldn't you prefer to replace brake pads to changing disc rotors?

by using harder pads, rotors wear out faster...

Are you referring to the Green EBC brake pads?

If yes, I have them on my 307 for the rear. Indeed, there is less brake dust as compared to the OEM brake pads. [nod]

Cheers
