Component speakers replace Subwoofer?

hi all

first of all, i'm not an ICE audiophile but i do appreciate the difference in sound between factory and "improved" car audio. Right now i have all stock speakers (2 front, 2 rear, 6.5"), 2 tweeters up front on dashboard factory location, a 4-ch amp and an active 8" subwoofer in the boot of my MPV.

i'm thinking of replacing just the rear speakers with a set of component speakers - main objective to remove the active sub (coz missus complain it's taking up boot space!), and still get similar sound. ideally i wld change all four speakers to comps, but got no budget. I don't really pump up the subwoofer a whole lot - i got it at the time when i was still quite ignorant, didn't know about comp speakers [rolleyes] but wanted more mid-bass. The rear speakers are installed at the 3rd row seat side panels.

Question is : will i likely lose a lot of bass with this change? Any tuning required, if so what wld normally be done? worth it or not? i know all this very subjective, but any feedback/suggestions welcomed. [flowerface]

component speaker will not be able to replace sub, both of them stand play their role in ICE, if you want to get rid of the sub, i suggest a 6x9 speaker for the rear, and 6.5 component for the front.

however 8" sub is not that big also, if you want good bass, change the active sub to passive and get an amp to drive it.

yup, agree with k2000, replace the rear with a decent pair of 6x9s.

as for the sub, since u are drvin a MPV, is there space btw the driver seat and the fron passeger seat(like the wish and estima)? there are people who remove that console and place a smal 8 " sub there. this way, u still get the bass and the boot space.. heheh..

no matter wat, when u take out the sub, the components will not be able to give u the sub freq.

My take is even a 6x9 rear wouldn't help recreate your bass. Change the front to componenets. Sound proof you front doors. That would be a much better solution. Cause the bass can be better created from an enclose volume than a free one, such as if you mount on the rear boot board.

So best solution is upgrade your fronts to a decent components, bridge and drive them using your amp for passive or even active if you are adventurous. Or look into the active sub from Kenwood, small enough to place under your seat.

Agreed. My friend after installing a good set of front speakers, had enuff bass to compensate the removal of his 2 dual voice coil RF sub-woofers. Naturally he didnt, coz to him, more bass is better. Hahaha.........

comp spks can never replace Subs but u can get very good mid.mid bass from good componenets, try spending more on the components and let the sub stay if u dun need so much lows~~ might help, come for meetups and let the guys know your problems and let them audit, IMHO

OK, thanks. I'm leaving the space between front driver and passenger for kids' movement.. dun wanna use it. But space kinda limited for subwoofer no? Even for my Trajet, i think if Wish will be worse (my brother drives one)...

if u are willing to invest a bit, u can make a small box for ur 8 inch, make it long and shaped like the arm rest, then u can put a nice mat over it, then ur kids can like step step over it lah. but make sure the box built properly ah.. heheh

Thanks for the tips. The rear side panels are enclosed, but i did think of having the comp speakers up front. afterall, only i bother about the sound in my car.. [:)]

Hi!

A typical 6 x 9 speaker is as per the attached photo - both the bass and tweeter are in 1 enclosure unlike a component set when the different components are physically separated.

As for your active sub, if you're only concern is boot space, you can try considering either moving the current active sub up front under your front seats, or in the middle of the 2 front seats. [nod]

Ya, cannot replace. But our friend here don't blast ma. A good set of components with sound proofed doors should be better then the 6x9. Unless it is a component 6x9 mount in the sound-proofed doors. [laugh]

Then you would seriously have to consider changing to a smaller sized woofer - be it active or passive.

I had a Pioneer active prior to my current woofer - like the one in the photo - which could be placed under the seats - really compact!
