Editt Neutral Newbie January 7, 2006 Share January 7, 2006 Went to check out a EP70 for sale this afternoon, and would like to cofirm the following: 1)Is power steering conversion for the EP70 possible? if so, how much would it cost and use parts from which donate car? 2) Changing of drive shaft shouldn't be a expensive exceris i presume. And i can only use the standard EP70 replacement parts only or is there other better alternative. 3) Does standard Yr 1988 EP70 comes with 5 speed gear box or should it be 4 speed only. 4) Lastly, if the rear suspension setup of the EP70 is a torsion beam setup (hopefuly i am right), is it difficult to tune the starlet suspension to be more stable on cornering? ↡ Advertisement
Genie47 1st Gear January 7, 2006 Share January 7, 2006 Yes but hardly worth the effort. If you need PS, it will be from a Corolla XL AKA EE100 with the 2E 1.3L engine. It will weight the Starlet down and sap its power. Unless you have a 3E, hardly worth it. As for drive shafts, yes the stock ones are OK. The pre-1989 ones come with 4-speed and are incredible sprint machines due to the short gear ratios. FC is about the same between the 4-speed and 5-speed if you have a 2E eingine. I 12km/L mostly but with the 5-speed, around 12.5km/L. At 4-gear for the 4-speed, the engine buzzes very loudly. The rear is beam axle. There are Koni yellow dampers for Starlet. Lowering springs are also available in the market.
Editt Neutral Newbie January 9, 2006 Author Share January 9, 2006 I have driven Non-PS b4 (Datsun100AFI), never remember it to be so heavy, maybe the steering system of this particular car is gone. How much would a recon drive shafts cost me? maybe S$100 without labour? So if this is a 5 speed, it is confirmed not orginal, so if i mate this 5 speed to a 3E, it should be fine, right? How much would the setup cost me? The loweing spring and the Koni Yellow dampers? btw genie, thanks for your reply, do you know any one with a EP70 to sell? Genie47 1st Gear January 9, 2006 Share January 9, 2006 The gearboxes as long they are not from the turbo versions are alright. You can take the donor gearbox from a G7 Corolla XL. About the suspension, I dunno. Most of us that time bought from each other used. As for who is going to sell an EP70, it is anyone's guess. Most of them are now owned by ahpeks and aunties who hold on to their pennies. Even they are wise not to bite into owning a new car. The souped up ones are usually owned by young fans. So_nice 6th Gear January 9, 2006 Share January 9, 2006 how much would the labour+part cost be for dropping 3E or 4E-FTE engine into ep80? which is more advisable? worried abt inspection hassle when i get this babe.
Genie47 1st Gear January 9, 2006 Share January 9, 2006 I'm sorry this is not open to discussion in the forums. Arrange for meetup. We will challenge you to cross the Ring of Fire on Mount Hakaluku and then you will be given a Starlet Fan callsign.
