Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2006 Share January 5, 2006 (edited) Just got word that there are some synthetic multigrade oils that are almost like straight weight oil. They are: Mobil 1 10W30 Castrol SLX-A3 0W30 (explains why the wear is so low in when it is used) Redline 5W20 and 10W30 Amsoil ACD 10W30 They are synthetic oil that are like straight weights because their VII is very very low but still qualify as multigrade. These oil have very high HTHS. Edited January 5, 2006 by Genie47 ↡ Advertisement
Spade Neutral Newbie January 5, 2006 Share January 5, 2006 what's the benefits and disadvantages of a straight weight oil?
Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2006 Author Share January 5, 2006 High temperature high shear stability. Can whack at NSH and the oil will still maintain its grade.
Trex101 3rd Gear January 5, 2006 Share January 5, 2006 Yes, that's why 5w20, 10w30 or 15w40 is more preferred than most other oil weights for shear stability.
Upguy Neutral Newbie January 5, 2006 Share January 5, 2006 how bout M1 5w-30 ? can whack NSH also?
Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2006 Author Share January 5, 2006 It is rated by GM to be long drain and high temperature operation and is factory fill in Corvettes. Should be OK but the better one is still M1 10W30.
Sabian Turbocharged January 5, 2006 Share January 5, 2006 Hi Genie what abt RP 10w30 and Schaffer's 10-30? do they fall into your category of straight weights?
Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2006 Author Share January 5, 2006 By virtue all the oils mentioned are not straight weights. Technically they are not because they have cold temperature pumpability of a 10W. Dunno if RP 10W30 or Schaeffer's 10W30 are narrow range multigrades. Seanboi 1st Gear November 28, 2006 Share November 28, 2006 seems the RL 5W30 and 10W30 have a HTHS of 3.8 leh... But 10W30 has a VI of 142 while 5W30 has a VI of 162. So which would be better?
