Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 I'm 90% done on my DIY capsule from PVC pipes. Want to thank "Firespitter" & "Normal_aspirated" for giving some critical information to put me on a think path. Design Vol, Market spec = 1.0lit to 1.7lit My material 3" PVC pipe, Hazard from MSDS "will degrade at 260oC to produce HCL" Parts: 1) 3" PVC pipe, lenght 12" 2) 2x PVC endcap & 2x eblow 3) 2x brass spigot, 1 end with screw tread & nut. Cost = RM$28 Time taken 3hrs max. ↡ Advertisement
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 (edited) Based on my calculations. to get abt vol of 1.0l..capsule length is 12". 14" will get me abt 1.28l btw the market spec. Most critical link will be the installing the brass spigot to the endcaps, must be air tight. This is how I did it. 1. eyeball the spigot to the center of the endcap & mark the position & center of the circle 2. drill a small pilot hole on the center mark. Then use a bigger drill bit to take out more material, lastly use the biggest drill bit you got & drill to the final position. 3. the spigot end is 12mm. I only got 9.5mm bit. So what I did was too run the drill up & down the sides to slowly shave off material until it hits the final mark. 4. slowly screw in the brass spigot. If its going off center means your hole it too small. Start shaving material again & try. Note take off only enough material sothat the fit is tight. 5. lastly I use super steel Epoxy-fix to form a seal betw the spigot & the PVC endcap. Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 (edited) Next water test for leak. I filled the whole endcap with water & watch for leaks...everything is fine no leaks. Edited November 17, 2005 by Tanjm348
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 Complete Capsule.... I have not decided whether I want to make it to a U-Shape to make it more compact for easier installion. I seems like I have to take it down to try to fit it into the engine bay 1st to finally decide where to mount it. So I'm left with final assembly which will be just to use PVC glue & teflon white tape. Most likely will paint it in Red...bring out some life to engine bay

Trex101 3rd Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 Ha... that pretty good. I also did my DIY capsule yrs ago but the problem is you need to install a check valve before the brake pump, if not once engine stall you will lose all brake pressure, very dangerous... Wolverine Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 This is real Ghetto dood....u sure the darn thing will survive engine bay temp? and the vibration wont cause the seams to leak ? i dunno man ....PVC, Glue and engine just dont work out for me .... Robin 4th Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 looks good..but, can it withstand the pressure & heat? i'm not sure...
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 (edited) Heat most likely ok...the PVC cannot withstand until 260oC before it starts giving off HCL. if I not wrong PVC is self-extinguishing..... The Epoxy-fix is heat resistance. It can be use to seal up leaks or cracks on exhausts. So its up to the white Teflon & glue to do its job. If not I could seal seal it with Epoxy-fix around the joints. 2nd worry I had was pressure...I think it can take +ve pressure...-ve pressure still a question mark. I intend to glue arcylic braces across the PVC pipe on the inside as its quite thin. the endcap should be able to hold its own. I guess I try into out in the car. I'll nvr know. For the heat if I can get a thermo heat gun to test it if not I'll bang on the fact that if it goes beyond 260oC, my rubber hoses would melt as well. Lastly the effect on brakes...that's my biggest concern. I know it will be affected buy not sure how. I'll get a check valve. This one better don't play play Edited November 17, 2005 by Tanjm348
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 Where did you get a check valve from...Guess its a danger even if you install a capsule from the shop. I think its worst when you install things like E68 or AirMax and you are lossing vacuum in the system.
Trex101 3rd Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 I couldn't find one so i took my capsule out. too dangerous for me.
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 maybe I go look at check valves for air hoses. The HW shop which I got the parts from told me the brass parts were for air hoses. Either use fish tank parts.. If I manage to get one you interested? But did you capsule work. Could it withstand the heat?...how was the throttle response?
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 (edited) I was try to DIY a steel capsule. They sell on the market for abt $100 to $300+ depending on size. It has 2 function depending on where its installed. if on the brake vacuum line, it increases braking pwr by acting as a vacuum tank. if installed on the vacuum line going into the throttle body. It acts as a air tank allow more air to be sucked into the air system, making your air-fuel ration leaner (ie more air). So its suspose to increase pwr, help reduce FC & improve car throttle response. That's what I'm told on this & other forums. But they cost too much & construction is simple. So try to DIY for fun...only RM$28. try searching for "capsule" on the forum. Edited November 17, 2005 by Tanjm348
Trex101 3rd Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 Yah it works too well, throttle and FC both improved. My avg FC from 13km/l to 14km/l but too scare to use because if skid or stall brakes will lose pressure, so give up idea and remove the mod. If you can find a suitable check valve, yes i will be interested. PM me ok
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Author Share November 17, 2005 (edited) Ok...do you still remember the volume of your capsule. I'm thinking of making 1 more for the brake line, but smaller volume & with a check valve. On a personal note...I felt on a scale of 1 to 10..in difficulty of construction. I properly give it a low 4.....its really easy to make. I even bought extra parts like elbows & brass nuts..but endup not using them...that would bring the cost to abt RM$20 ==> S$8 Edited November 17, 2005 by Tanjm348
Robin 4th Gear November 18, 2005 Share November 18, 2005 as for the brakes, try as much as possible to ensure that there's no leaks and the hoses dont kink... ↡ Advertisement
