Ahhan7 Neutral Newbie November 15, 2005 Share November 15, 2005 im not sure abt the air-con problem but should be the compressor. abt the tappet sound, pump higher RON rating petrol. if u are running on RON 95 now, change to RON 98. it should solve the problem. but if u are already running on RON 98, im not sure what the problem is now. Zyrofillica 1st Gear November 15, 2005 Share November 15, 2005 Hi Andy I also drive a galant. Pls check out this link to the local Galant Club Website. Zyrofillica 1st Gear November 15, 2005 Share November 15, 2005 Changing fuel to higher ron doesnt help. The tappet sound is common for aged galant GDI engines.
Starlet Neutral Newbie November 16, 2005 Share November 16, 2005 (edited) hi My starlet had this tapping sound since i bought it 4year ago. Mech say due to cam lifter.[or rocker arm] Will need a top engine overhaul if want to change it. As the car is running fine, mech advise to save the money. till today still tapping ......... cheers Edited November 16, 2005 by Starlet
Yeobh 4th Gear November 16, 2005 Share November 16, 2005 Tappet noise - either due to incoreect clearance setting or it is a mechanical problem due to wear and tear of the rocket arms contacting surfaces.

Raymond5613 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 question 1, agree with ahhan7,should be your compressor,I also had it before. question 2,try changing to a thicker engine oil it may help.
Thadeus6 Neutral Newbie November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 Q1: Sounds like compressor on its way out. You can try Mark Kool in Woodlands. You can find their address in the phone book. Look for Ah Huat. The prices resaonable and their workmanship very good. Q2: Tappet sound you can ignore it. Its due to rocker arm and lifter wear. You can try changing your engine oil to something with a higher weight like 0W-50 however your fuel consumption will suffer. For cars here, not worth repairing because it is expensive to do since we scrap our cars within 10 years.
Pisces69 6th Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 For the AC, best I can recommend is Markcool in woodlands indl park E. Yup,, Ah Huat is the guy to see. I've been using them for many years now & still no complaints. For the tappets, get a mech to check your valve clearence if it's within specs. If not, just get him to adjust. Not a big issue. But even after adjusting, it might still b a little noisy as it might b normal for that type of engine or your lifters or cam lobe starting to wear, although those things last a very long time ( Unless u have a modded high lift cam). One way to quiten them is use a heavier oil. If u r going to do a overhaul, dont forget to check the valve springs. If they r worn, change at the same time. Pisces69 6th Gear November 17, 2005 Share November 17, 2005 I guess it's like that now as he got many many customers. He has alot of regulars which is a good sign as means he is good. I usually leave my car there & he call me to collect when ready, although last time he send me home & pick me up later. But I do stay quite near the ws. Give him a break as he needs to eat too. Nevermind as when he has eaten, he has more energy to do a good job. I now reluctant to recommend him anymore as he got too many customers & I told him so. He just laugh & say thanks for giving him more work. Remember he is a salaried employee & not the boss. Profits dont go to him. Maybe that's why I usually tip him abt $10 after I check his work. Feeling very sad now coz juz bought this car a fews month back.advice needed!!thks alot!! 1) For the air-con in addition to what is said, it could just be the "switch" in the vents that adjusts the amount of cold and hot air that comes out thats at fault esp. if you car has climate control. 2)I don't know if GDI engines have a rocker arm setup, but i'm sure that they use a hydraulic lifter/tappet setup. The cause in 90% of the cases is not wear and tear but an air bubble in the hydralics. The only way is to actually remove the lifter and bleed it, then soak it in engine oil. Using a thicker oil will reduce it, and if it isn't too bad may eliminate it. The other 10% is either through a blockage in the hydraulics or incorrest clearance settings but both are very rare. Its only with the solid setup that requres checking and adjsuting of the clearances, and the only time this is required in a hydraulic lifter setup is when the lifters have been replaced. A common mistake is that wear and tear causes hydraulic lifters to screw up (its true for solid lifters) when its the opposite. its screwed up lifters that cause wear and tear to the cams. (i.e. air in the hydralics causes the lifters to be of the incorrect level/speed/settings thus resulting in wear and tear). This is because if the hydraulics are fine, the hydraulic lifters will adjust themselves accordingly. Edited November 17, 2005 by Elfenstar
