Marusho Clutched November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 Just sent my car in for 30k servicing. As usual, I bring my own engine oil and oil filter. However this time, the agent said that there are previous cases where owners bring their own OEM Oil Filter that leaks. After their "investigations", they found that the part in question have been stored too long and the seal is not working as intended. Therefore by asking them to use my own OEM filter, they will not liable if there is a leak. My question, is the rubber gasket on oil filters that prone to weathering due to storage? ↡ Advertisement
Genie47 1st Gear November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 Rubber will degrade under heat and it depends on the the additives in the rubber. Those icky sticky rubber bands stored in your drawer is proof. I doubt they are prone to weathering. The rubber in oil filters are not vulcanized. They are very soft. It is through the heat of the engine that they get vulcanized.
Nine_eleven 2nd Gear November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 but the oil filters are stored at the distributor when shipped in, and stored at the stockists and then stored at the dealer before being used too...
Godfinger Neutral Newbie November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 (edited) Puntured Oil filter will leaked. Everybody knows but if you say your agent claims that the oil sealed in the filter has been stored too long and it induces leak when installed in the engine, then chances are they are finding excuses. Oil Filter do not have shelve life. As even mentioned by Genie, the rubber is not vulcanised. They are very soft and gets adhere to the mating surface tightly. So if they were making this remark to shift responsiblities, then its best we did our servicing out side rather then in the control of a Stealership. Yeobh 4th Gear November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 The o-ring are not rubber most of them are neoprene design to within high temp, at least 200psi oil pressure. The leak can be due to sub-standard oil filter used or the mech didn't install and torque the filter correctly. No shop owner in his correct mind will warranty engine failure cuased by to oil filter leakage unless the unit is OEM supplied by the shop
Fcw75 Hypersonic November 10, 2005 Share November 10, 2005 (edited) Must be KM rite? Dun care abt them, I have used the OEM filter I bought from Tanly a lot of times (5 times to be exact) and it's okay. I always checked for leaks. The only reason I can tink of is those goondu mechanic purposely didn't tighten the OEM filter properly which the owners bring in and then if engine oil leaks later on, they will blame it on the filter. They want you to use their green colour filter from Thailand, the brand is Hamp if I remembered correctly.
