Renegade Neutral Newbie April 16, 2002 Share April 16, 2002 (edited) We're talking about rarefied atmosphere here, but I suppose most of us forum folks would have seen pics of Porsche's Cayenne ? Here's a quick blurb: ".....the Cayenne Turbo, which will be powered by a Porsche-designed 4.5-liter, twin turbocharged V-8 engine rated at 450 horsepower and producing 457 lb-ft of torque. Porsche also announced a second model, the normally aspirated, 4.5-liter, V-8-powered Cayenne S, which is rated at 340 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Cayenne Turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds, vs. 7.2 seconds for the Cayenne S...." Don't know about the general sentiment but here's the first salvo - nice figures, shame about the shape. It's a poor mismatch of the current Porsche signature nose with an over-boxed up body. Porsche's designers could have done better.... Of course, on the flipside, they're going ahead with the Carrera GT, with 1000 units planned..... www.porschecayenne.com, www.porsche.com Edited April 16, 2002 by Renegade ↡ Advertisement
Magfocus 5th Gear April 16, 2002 Share April 16, 2002 You are talking about waaaaaaay up there my frnd Was there enough development time? Or were they just in a great hurry to produce an X5 rival?

Seansene 1st Gear April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 (edited) I really really hate to say this about a Porsche, but this thing is UGGG-LLLY! What were they thinking when they did away with the trademark lovely proportions? The poise? The simplicity? These guys basically grafted a 911 bonnet and headlights onto a cardboard box... sigh... Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 Volvo's XC90 much better right? Due end of this year! http://www.mycarforum.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1550
Renegade Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Author Share April 19, 2002 Much better looking ? Definitely - at least it doesn't look like a Tamiya kit gone wrong.....
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Share April 19, 2002 The XC90 is going to play the X5 playing field, let's see how the Cayenne holds against the X5 and RX300
Renegade Neutral Newbie April 19, 2002 Author Share April 19, 2002 As if that wasn't going to be interesting enuff, let's throw in its Tuareg cousin and a couple more premium soft-roaders.....
Magfocus 5th Gear April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 Love the look of the XC90 as well as the engine Twin turbocharged from the S80 T6? Imagine the tuning possibililities!!
Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 Hi Magfocus I saw that Porsche too. Business bad at Porsche? Why go into the SUV market? They should remain a Sports Car company right?
Magfocus 5th Gear April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 I think they would want to expand to an additional market. The thought of a 'super' SUV is quite appealing to me! of cse whether i can afford one is another matter...can dream though
Renegade Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Author Share April 20, 2002 And supercar mkt getting increasingly crowded - think Merc's Vision SLR, Bugatti, rejuvenated Lambo, revived Maserati, etc. I think you get the picture. To make things worse, the 'affordable' range which the Boxter, partially responsible for reversing the firm's fortunes a couple of years back, covers is also really heating up. Fastforward Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 What do you think the Porsche Cayenne will sell at? BMW X5 4.4 -- $360,000 Volvo XC 90 - ?? I think 210,00 max Porsche Cayenne- ?? I think should not be more than 350,
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie April 20, 2002 Share April 20, 2002 Yeah Twin turbo 2.8 from the T6, it's actually a LPT with two small turbos driving 3 cylinders each.
Renegade Neutral Newbie April 22, 2002 Author Share April 22, 2002 Sounds feasible - I figured a ballpark of 3-400k, considering the Porsche tag, y'know, premium price, etc. Still doesn't make it look any better - wonder if it'll look better in the flesh (or metal) - just like the latest 7-series which looked kinda crap in some of the earlier photos I saw but actually felt was quite pleasing. Maybe the Ghim Moh market backdrop helped....

BM or Porsche
Renegade Neutral Newbie April 23, 2002 Author Share April 23, 2002 Ooo....now that's a tough one, esp when I've never seen a real Cayenne and I really do love the X5 4.4, esp with those really cool 19" rims. But based on the specs and what little I know, I think I'll take the humble route and go for the X5. And probably use that 35% that I save to spec it up with every possible option, including a beemer mountain bike.... What about you ? ↡ Advertisement
