The premium sound damm solid man. Was testing the T5 with it in volvo the last time. Actually the normal sound in S60 and c70 is quite solid already. 6 speakers excluding the tweeters if I am not wrong

The 6 speaker setup is just the basic system with alpine speakers if I'm not wrong. The premium system features amp, dynaudio speaker and woofer [shocked]

Hey Bros,

I've yet to come across an OEM system that can say is 'real car audio'. Not just saying this cuz I am an installer. [blush]

10 spkrs? The best can achieve is like clear pipe in music with no proper staging or Imaging. Dynaudio Spkrs? The real Dyns alone are over $1K per component set and require very powerful amp power to drive, no other system components or install labour factores in.

What I have found is that the 'premium systems' in luxury cars like Lexus, Beemers etc use brand names like Altec Lansing, Mark Levinson. These big names in home hi-fi used to elevate the px very substantially. And the car manufacturers prey on their trusting customers to get a nice piece of earning value audio option.

Strong words, but I know my car audio and no way those systems they offer come anywhere close to the value they ask. What irks me is that 4 the Px they ask, a really fantastic system can be put together.

TurboB, U know Megafocus spkr change. If I were to add the cheapest option sub to support those entry range speakers and blend it in, I would bet that the sound performance will likely be better than that 10 spkr set up Volvo is offering or any of the so-called hi-end systems offered by the other prestige car makes.

Of course for those who opt for such OEM systems are so psyched already by the manufacture's offer of this prestige system, they will believe that it is a happening system no matter what the performance. Unless they happen to be an experienced ICE enthusiast.

Hi Geoff,

Agree with your comments whole-heartedly. Auditioned an OEM soundsystem in the E200 Kompressor. Tweeters mounted on the edge of the dashboard, facing the passenger & driver, rear speakers mounted in the rear door.

End result: Boomy bass, quite piercing treble, less than fantastic sound staging. However, the BOSS (or BOSE) brand must have lifted the ego of the Mercedes owners.

I had thought most tweeters would be placed at the edge of the dash or at the corners of the doors. Where shd be the right spot to position them then ? I've seen a Civic with the tweeters placed at kneww level, just above the mid-bass spkrs. is that a good move ?

Piercing tweeters - could it also be that they didn't use a crossover to band-pass the frequeency ?

Thks.

Placing tweets ain't just cut and dry; ie no such thing as just put here and there is best doesn't work. Each vehicle model and type has different acoustics and sound ambience. Given that the tweets play the hi's which are the most directional the position in each vehicle is crucial. Even the position of the rear fill comes into play when considering where to place the tweets. [;)]

In car audio unlike home there isn't the luxury of sitting in the perfect sweet spot or shifting speakers ard till get best results. It takes a trained eye to approximate the best tweet posn and angle and tune-in for each vehicle and if result not quite right may take a second or third repositioning try. [crazy]

BTW if tweets are not X'ed or capacitor protected they will burst as soon as volume is canked a little. [:/]

Hi,

AutoS has replied to most of your questions. The placement of tweeters at 1) edge of dashboard 2) triangular plastic cover beside the rear view side mirrors, are the most common locations recommended by 99% of local installers. They'll tell u that these locations are good, helps to bring up the sound stage, helps to direct the trebles closer to your ear etc etc. End result, the sound will be quite incoherent since u tend to listen to the highs more prominently rather than the mids & lows, in a saloon car.

But on hindsight, I think these are the most convenient locations to install the tweeters also-extend the wire from the X-over, paste sticky pad onto the casing of the tweeters & job done.

I'm not saying that these locations are not ideal, but, essentially, u've to look at the car before deciding on the optimal locations. If u've been following AutoS' installs in the Wheels Asia magazine, the black Civic has the tweeters installed just above the mid-range drivers, while the silver CRV has the tweeters installed at the plastic over beside the rear view side mirrors , slidely angled.

Thanks. Yes. Locating the tweeter just above the mid-bass in that Civic is quite innovative and unusual. I'm driving a Civic as well ** hint hint :) The CRV method is the more common one and may end up "piercing" if not setup properly. The high-mid and low must be blended in evenly without losing the balance I guess. And I prefer to feel the bass, not hear it :)
