My friend just sold his 2001 Passat 1.8T.

Powerful car but apparently lots of electronics problems and very expensive mainteance.

You have got to be kidding me .. you are making a sweeping statement here. I owned a mid 2000 Passat B5 1.8T, good car, zero problems, cheap to maintain.

15K service interval, if you are changing oil only, it would not cost more than 2 services you have to do with Japanese cars combined.

BMW is not exactly 25K, it is computed by the computer based on a few factors. Things like driving pattern, traffic condition, etc will affects the actual service interval. Most people have to send in at around 20 to 22K, I do not believe anyone could actually do it at 25K.

My previous E46 and E39 all get serviced at around 20K.

depends though. my uncle has a 2002 Passat 1.8T and it gives him problems due to his low mileage. think only less then 50000km so far. the batt died early, the steering rod died early and the radio antenna base even cracked. but on the whole, a very fun and enjoyable car to drive.

My battery die when the car is about 2 years old .. I think it is normal. The cracked antenna base is a common problem on VW cars, it is irritating, but it still works. Guess what I am trying to say here is that to say the car is full of electronic problems is just not true .. my car is chipped, driven hard and had a few other mods, I know of a lot of other B5 owners and so far I do not think it is a problematic car.

Volvo is 5 cylinders and bigger cc, how to give better mileage?

Better drive maybe, since stock passat's suspension CMI.

Better service from agent definitely true. laugh.gif But if one goes outside wshop, then i think more VW expertise ard.

I think i will say the 5cy engine sounds nicer too.

But the cons IMHO are: smaller space, lower build quality, more ex parts, less mod choices & higher road tax.

how come nobody talks about saab9-3. its pretty close to the new passat price isnt it? & it looks great in a nice understated way. sigh, if only it has a manual version here.
