Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 23, 2005 Share October 23, 2005 Changed my alternator and power steering belts recently. My nissan sunny 1.5 FC increased from 12.5 to about 14km/L. Never changed the tyres. Has my calibration been screwed up or is my engine maturing? ↡ Advertisement
Georgecheng Neutral Newbie October 24, 2005 Share October 24, 2005 Really, can save fuel?? Time to change mine then. Btw, which workshop have you gone to? how much does they charge for it? Your is Nissan B14?? Anyway, where is power steering belt? Don't know have this.
Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 24, 2005 Author Share October 24, 2005 no no....i am asking if it can save fuel or my odometer screwed up
Fortress Clutched October 24, 2005 Share October 24, 2005 (edited) It might be possible. The old belt could have been slipping away and it make the engine works harder. Hence, maintenance is important. I am driving a car which many have only 12km/l and I am doing 14 to 16km/l. Octopus 3rd Gear October 24, 2005 Share October 24, 2005 (edited) It might be possible. The old belt could have been slipping away and it make the engine works harder. Hence, maintenance is important. I am driving a car which many have only 12km/l and I am doing 14 to 16km/l. Let me visualize this......the engine is the main driver, right? The energy from the engine drives the belts, which in turn drives the alternator/power steering. But if belt slipping away, that means the engine don't have to work as hard to drive the belt so will be more fuel efficient? On the other hand, if alternator's bearing is wearing out so not as smooth as the new one, then a new alternator will probably be driven with less energy from the engine, so therefore gives better FC. So my guess would be its the new alternator that's giving better FC (provided that odometer is accurate ). Edited October 24, 2005 by Octopus
Mivec9 1st Gear October 24, 2005 Share October 24, 2005 it shd be the alternator....it gives u constant voltage to charge the battery. Hence able to ensure combustion via spark plugs and fuel done. Replaced mine with 2nd hand and within 2 weeks unable to charge...hence got mech to replace another one for free. So far so good
Georgecheng Neutral Newbie October 24, 2005 Share October 24, 2005 How do we know the alternator is giving problem. Is it as long as the volt meter show a contant of 13.4+ v during moving, mean the alternator is good???
Fortress Clutched October 26, 2005 Share October 26, 2005 Pardon me, I was implying that the slippage, actually produces a jerking effect which is a greater than a constant effect.

Octopus 3rd Gear October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 I see.......but if have slippage, then probably the belt's internal surface would have excessive wear, perhaps glazed? Another possibility of improvement in FC is the alignment of the belts with pulley. Perhaps during the alternator and belt replacement the mechanic had adjusted the alignment and now it runs better. Godfinger Neutral Newbie October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 Dont see any alignment for belt drive. Only be able to adjust the tension and thats about it.
Godfinger Neutral Newbie October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 Steering Belt is exsistance only for engine driven steering system. If it is Electric power steering then do not have pump and belt already.
Octopus 3rd Gear October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 Dont see any alignment for belt drive. Only be able to adjust the tension and thats about it. Tension is different from alignment. Alignment is usually taken from the reference of one pulley to another, to see if its in a straight line.
Fortress Clutched October 28, 2005 Share October 28, 2005 (edited) I see.......but if have slippage, then probably the belt's internal surface would have excessive wear, perhaps glazed? Not necessary, if it is not as bad as to that, but I guess you got the idea. Another possibility of improvement in FC is the alignment of the belts with pulley. Perhaps during the alternator and belt replacement the mechanic had adjusted the alignment and now it runs better. Perhaps, the alignment, but difficult, if the alignment is very off, then there will be wear and also sounds, the bearing will go too.
