Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 16, 2005 Share October 16, 2005 went to my workshop yesterday to do some stuff and he detected 2 different kind of leaks under the car 1) Engine oil - there was this little bit of engine oil hanging at the undercarriage and 2) Power steering fluid - there was this piece of cover at the undercarriage that was a little oily, obviously smudged with oil. Driving a 1.5 sunny about 5 yrs, 90k milage. He told me that the engine oil leak is due to some worn out O ring or something like that. He advised no concern as it's pretty normal for old cars and no need to change. For the power steering fluid leak, he's doing a follow up on that during next servicing to see how much fluid dropped in the reservoir. but he suspects it's due to the power steering pump. he advised getting a refurbished pump if there really is a need to change. any advise? ↡ Advertisement

Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 16, 2005 Author Share October 16, 2005 is it easy to replace that engine oil gasket? how to find out if it's the engine oil gasket that is causing the problem? complex task?
RadX Moderator October 16, 2005 Share October 16, 2005 (edited) Quite an easy task....just changing the gasket any normal mech would be able to diagnose the problem...small issue Edited October 16, 2005 by RadX
Fortress Clutched October 16, 2005 Share October 16, 2005 It is a simple process, but not worth doing it yourself. Did mine sometime ago for about S$20. However, you need a torque wrench to do it that cost S$200.
Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 16, 2005 Author Share October 16, 2005 how to see that the leak is from the gasket and not anywhere else? how to visually inspect? dun want the mechanic to rip me off

Yeobh 4th Gear October 16, 2005 Share October 16, 2005 The problem will go away if you can get hold of a can of oil seal treatment. The chemical is desinged to impregnates old worn oil seals and thereby increase the volume of of the seal.

Me driving a COE car, and I also noticed that one of the piping for the power steering is wet, minor leakage (won't drip to the floor kind). So far power steering fluid level had been maintaining so I didn't do anything to it.

Is it similiar to those STP stop leak?
Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 16, 2005 Author Share October 16, 2005 thanks! is that for the worn out gasket (engine oil leak) or for the power steering fluid? the workshop guy told me that the power steering fluid leak is due to the pump and not the seal. not an expert in this but i assume leak due to pump is different from seal. Nissantoot Neutral Newbie October 16, 2005 Author Share October 16, 2005 same also...but I din go scrutinise my piping. saw a metal casing under the undercarriage wet with the power steering oil. doesn't leak to the floor kind and the fluid level has not been decreasing, so i din do anything to it yet. but the feeling is still not shiok to know that the car is leaking. trying to find out what i can do to stop it. Fortress Clutched October 17, 2005 Share October 17, 2005 Assuming you have open the engine compartment and know where is the engine block. There are 2 places where oil can be, engine top and mid block. You can see it very oily or black. You can change the top, and it will not cost you more than S$30 or so. As for the mid block, you can use sealant instead.

Yeobh 4th Gear October 17, 2005 Share October 17, 2005 Basically it is a stop leak chemical - it stop the leak by treating and expanding the leaking seals volume by 3%. Sutiable for cars over 3 years old and can be used to treat leaks in Tansmission, Differentials, Hydraulics systems, power steering etc. ↡ Advertisement
