Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie September 26, 2005 Share September 26, 2005 I suspected that my exhaust system is leaking...was proved correct when a friend suggested I do a simple test. Block the exhaust & see if the engine stalls or clasping for air. Well it didn't and was running when I did that. But I believe the leak is minimum if not it would have sounded like those malaysian "beng" car. Anyone knows if it will cause a drop in performance? the increased flow due to the leak might reduce the need to de-cat ↡ Advertisement
Jhoo Neutral Newbie September 27, 2005 Share September 27, 2005 Just wondering what did you use to block your exhaust since the fumes are so hot? Saw this trick works in a movie using bananas years ago ... I ever had a punctured muffler on a old car, FC went up, didn't change until the humming was terribly unbearable. Very bad for rear pasengers.
Firespitter Neutral Newbie September 27, 2005 Share September 27, 2005 Yes. A leaky exhaust does affect the performance of a car. Use the theory of a drinking straw with a hole in it.
Dagger13 Neutral Newbie September 27, 2005 Share September 27, 2005 Not only that, it'll definitely increased d fuel consumption
Yeobh 4th Gear September 27, 2005 Share September 27, 2005 Leaking exhaust will not generate back pressure in the system. Without or too much back pressure your engine will not be able to perform to its best. That why a well designed exhaust system is a very impt part of engine power improvement excercise. Jamesgetz 4th Gear September 27, 2005 Share September 27, 2005 Is there any quick and easy way to test for leaky exhaust?
Tanjm348 Neutral Newbie September 28, 2005 Author Share September 28, 2005 Saw that one too ....actually just use slippers. Use the flat sole press hard against the opening. The pressure was great but exhaust was not very hot. Anyway there seems to be a bit of knocking but engine still running. Actually its been there for sometime. But I think recently it got worst. I suspect its damaged during parkings. Most likely will have it checked in JB..heard it quite cheap
Elfenstar 3rd Gear September 29, 2005 Share September 29, 2005 Is there any quick and easy way to test for leaky exhaust? Jack the whole car up when its cold (remember to use axle stands please), and use a diswashing detergent with water mixture and "spray" it over the entire length of exhaust. Start the car, and look for small bubbles forming. I would also suggest doing this to the section where the exhaust manifold meets the head and where they join with the exhaust as the gaskets for these tend to be the first to go. Chye Neutral Newbie October 3, 2005 Share October 3, 2005 Yap it affect. Just like a straight thr' exhaust (if u change one, but affect only 5%). At low end u got no so call " back pressure" so the mixture actually got draw/push out of the end before it reach it's stroke due to the pressure of the system. But when the system cam changes at certain angle at higher rev it may be good. Cause the sequence overlap then a more thr' exhaust will aid. You may get a better performace. http://www.xcrossroad.com
Twnll 1st Gear October 3, 2005 Share October 3, 2005 This back pressure thing, also apply to diesel engines??
Elfenstar 3rd Gear October 3, 2005 Share October 3, 2005 backpressure thing??? errm I'm more concerned about the turbulance which slows the flow of the exhaust gases when it comes to exhaust leaks. I don't know much about diesel engines, but I figure that it would work the same on a diesel engine as the way they work is similar when it comes to getting rid of gases. Only real difference is in the way diesel engines ignite the fuel.
Yeobh 4th Gear October 4, 2005 Share October 4, 2005 For DIY the only way is visaul inspection. For the professional they use a UV smoke generator. The car is jacked up on a car lift, UV smoke is then introudced into the exhaust pipe from the tail end. The mechanic will shine uv detecting light onto locations that they suspect are the cuprits. If there is a leak , normally the mechanics can see with the nake eyes but for cases of hairline cracks the uv smoke will show out as coloured lines. Srssrs Neutral Newbie October 11, 2005 Share October 11, 2005 hey mann... I had a punctured exhaust once too when i reverse into a curb. Pls note that the hole may expand after some time and the whole pipe may just disconnect and sound will be extreme loud and irritating. sound more like a bus exhaust. haha And yup, acceleration for gear 1 and 2 may seem slightly better but take note FC will go up. Cheers! ↡ Advertisement
