Wheel width & size diff

Hwy guys/gals,

Need ur opinion on wheels.

Read somewhere before, larger and wider tires is harder to stop than a smaller and narrower wheel, is this true? On the other hand, bigger and wider wheels contribute to stability, true?

Frm a 13" 175 width to a 14" 195 width, will there be any diff?

Any adv or disadv to have a bigger and wider wheel compared to the stock ones? BTW, I am more concern on Safety and FC aspect.

Also, can anyone recommend some good Taiwan/cheap Rims to look out for? Whats the general weight guideline for a resonable light 14" & 13", huh?

Thanks in advance...

Draw upon your high school physics.

Wider tyres more surface contact better grip (consideration that you are using the same model of tyres as comparison).

Harder to stop would also mean a longer braking distance in some instances it is true when the overall tyre-rim set up is significantly higher.

For Example: If you are on a 185/70/15 and you upsize to a 245/45/17. the 15" tyre and rim set up would probably weight about 15kg per tyre-rim but the 17s would top the scales at about 21kgs. That's 6x4= 24kgs.

Of course this example is extreme. But bear in mind that upsizing the rims would result in a weight penality even if the upsize rims alone weight just about same as the current smaller rim. Why?

A lower profile tyre will have a higher mass (kg/m3) per tyre. So the tyres alone will add up on weight thanks to added steel and cord braiding used in the beads, side walls.

But the weight gain for a 15 to 16 is not as big as a 16 to 17 weight gain (for the same rim and tyre combo) That is why for 17s and above it may sometimes be more worthwhile to serious consider forged.

There may be a physiacl limitation in your from wheel well as there might not have enough room to accomdate the larger/fatter tire. Check you car manual to see is you can install a larger tyre.
