What's That Noise?

Did the usual this morning...started the ignition, released handbrake and threw gear into one. Suddenly a loud bang from the rear of the car.

Wheels were not punctured. No objects underneath the carriage...

What could it be?

Maybe the combustion out of the rear exhuast ?

Could happen if during a cold start and the mixture is too rich...

Juz a thought... [:)]

(edited)

I'm on brake drums on the rear; it did feel like it was coming out from the one of the rear wheels...

The combustion theory might be possible too.

The beans theory is out!

I'd thought it was a misfire...

Well, nothing looks or feels weird today.

I agreed with Magfocus, it could be due to the rear drum brake shoes being stuck to the drum, after you pull your hand brakewink.gif Get your mech to take a look at the rear drum brake shoes, it could be time to change smile.gif

ok...guess it'll be the rear brake drums...but this is definitely a first for me...

any considerable damage to the brake pad/drum in such an instance? The handbrake and everything still feels normal.

TB:

You're right on the money I washed my car the night before. Here's an experience from someone else I read:

"Finally got around to putting in the rear brake pads and checking out the problem with the parking brake "banging" when moving after releasing it on the 86 240GL Wagon.

The apparent cause was corrosion in the connection between the cable and the first lever/cam. This is supposed to pivot when actuating/releasing the parking brake-- one side was totally stuck. A little WD-40 and a lot of manually pivoting freed it up, then added a small bit of motorcycle chain lube. Did the same with the second pivot point, cleaned things up, and reassembled. It seems to have cured the problem.

The cables were not hung-up in any way.

It looks as though enough moisture gets into the parking brake area to cause corrosion if things are not kept lubricated. Living in the snow/salt belt probably doesn't help."

That's what happened to me after releasing the parking brake!
