Presea 3rd Gear January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 Hi guys, I just bought an MP3 Player (iPOD for Windows), hoping that I could connect it to my car's HU. I have seen the back of the HU before, and didn't realise the RCA connectors were a "bus audio-in", which meant that it also required a bus control cable to work. It's not an "Aux-in". It was supposed to be linked to a Sony CD/MD changer. So... I was hoping some of you could shed some light on the following choices... Option A: Find a good ICE guy who could hot-wire my Sony HU so that the bus audio can be used for "line-in" Anyone knows of a good ICE guy... Option B: Get an FM transmitter, hopefully with 12V adapter. Anyone knows where to get such a device. I've read seeral different accounts of such mods on overseas websites, and the 1st option is preferred as the sound quality would be much better. But the 2nd option would be simpler to do.... Does anyone know of another method (other than getting a new HU)? Thanks ↡ Advertisement
Rb20det Clutched January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 I heard my friend say use a stereo cable connect to pre amp aux. Just my 2 cents.
Presea 3rd Gear January 21, 2003 Author Share January 21, 2003 I'm assuming that means the amp that is separate from the HU. Pity my amp only powers the subwoofer... Guess for the best effect, I'll need to add an amp or change the HU....
Tester88 Neutral Newbie January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 hi, 1. you can get a FM transmiter from Apple shop in wheellock place. They sell one for Ipod cost about $39. Run on 2 AAA battery. Work well. 2. Get a pre-amp which allow two input. so can switch between Hu and Ipod.
Presea 3rd Gear January 21, 2003 Author Share January 21, 2003 Thanks. I was hoping not to have to use batteries... BTW, how large is a preamp? is it the size of a small amp or even smaller... I already have an amp beneath my passenger seat,....
Tester88 Neutral Newbie January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 hi, the pre-amp is about 16x10x20mm.

Rb20det Clutched January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 The concept form the FM modulator does it apply to portable MD player? If yes, then I will get a CD/MP3 HU with the MD portable
Psychoboy Neutral Newbie January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 does this FM modulator work on other audio devices? or need modification?
Nohnemwan 1st Gear January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 The input of the FM modulator comprises 2 RCA sockets, one for each channel. In other words, just like any conventional home hifi or car hifi input. Therefore you need a source device which ideally has RCA output jacks. Even if you do not have RCA output from your source, perhaps earphone or headphone jack only, you can still buy a headphone-jack-to-RCA-plug pair of wires, although the connection is not ideal, it will still work. The output of the FM modulator is a male antenna jack to plug directly into your radio antenna socket (to inject the signal into your car tuner), and there is also a female antenna socket for the car antenna cable to plug into (so that your tuner is still able to use your car antenna). Please cut and paste the URLs I supplied to see this thing and understand it. Much better than trying to imagine from the words I have used.

Nohnemwan 1st Gear January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 Oops maybe I did not actually say that I have one for sale. Yes I have one for sale for S$70, unused and boxed (left over when I bought a complete MP3 jukebox - see the same website for more info - 60GB, 3500 songs at 256kB and not even 70% full). A few car hifi places will also have it. If you think I have the solution (please ask around from the car hifi shops, their price might be lower than mine), please call me at 9147 6031. If I miss your call then please SMS me. Thanks.
Nohnemwan 1st Gear January 21, 2003 Share January 21, 2003 Oops maybe I did not actually say that I have one for sale. A few car hifi places will also have it. To listen to the ext audio device just select the frequency that you have preset on your tuner. The modulator gives you 3 presets, you use a jumper switch on the outside of the unit to choose 1 of the 3 presets, and tune your tuner to that particular frequency. The presets are 88.1, 88.3 and 88.7MHz. When you don't want to listen to the ext audio device then just select another frequency (if you want to listen to the tuner) or do whatever to listen to your CD player. The antenna has nothing to "switch" because there is a pass through connector to allow the antenna to function normally and receive signals as it would normally do. If you think I have the solution (please ask around from the car hifi shops, their price might be lower than mine), please call me at 9147 6031. If I miss your call then please SMS me. Note that the sound quality is "FM quality". If your external source material is FM quality anyway and not CD quality then yes this is a good and cheap way of connecting an external device without using up a slot in your dashboard. However if your external source is truly CD quality (CD or MP3 at 320kbs or at least 256kbs) then a direct connection via RCA cable will give you better quality than using a FM modulator. Thanks. Rb20det Clutched January 22, 2003 Share January 22, 2003 That mean if I using the FM modulator the sound quality is as good as the radio stereo sound ... am I right. If I use an portable MP3 player connected with the preamp with stereo -> RCA connection so it will depend on the sound quality that recoreded to the MP3 devices right ... OK ... OK ... I understand liao ...
Nohnemwan 1st Gear January 22, 2003 Share January 22, 2003 >>That mean if I using the FM modulator the sound quality is as good as the radio stereo sound ... am I right. << Correct. >>If I use an portable MP3 player connected with the preamp with stereo -> RCA connection so it will depend on the sound quality that recoreded to the MP3 devices right ... << Also correct. If your portable source quality is true CD or MD quality (portable CD player type), then using a direct RCA cable is better. Then you don't need my modulator because direct wire CD quality always better than FM quality. But if your portable source quality is cassette or MP3 recorded at lower than 128kbs, then using the FM modulator will not "blur" the sound. The FM modulator is "convenient, cheap and good". Quality also same same "convenient, cheap and good". You must decide what you want.
Rb20det Clutched January 22, 2003 Share January 22, 2003 Nohnemwan, about the solution that you posted at the next topic .. May I know how you upload your MP3 to the HDD? Beside how to scroll the song and select? It sound quite good to me ... But you still need to have a HU to play CD. AM I right ...
Nohnemwan 1st Gear January 22, 2003 Share January 22, 2003 Please cut and paste this URL: http://www.ssiamerica.com/ The MP3 player is nothing more than a HDD rack with some proprietary electronics. The kit comes with a rack to mount inside your car, and another rack to mount inside your computer. To upload songs just unrack from the car and re-rack into the computer, then just copy from your internal HDD onto this external HDD. Or just rip songs directly onto the external HDD. The latest version comes with a USB 2.0 connection so you don't have to install a removable HDD rack in your computer. Theoretically you do not need a HU to play CD, because if you are happy with listening to your MP3 only, then why listen to anything else? The MP3 player has a remote HU / display / controller with volume and track selection and basic tone control. So if you have a external amp, then you're good to go. Please visit the URL. I really can't keep answering all your questions. ↡ Advertisement
