Disc brakes vs Drum brakes

Agree, for those cars, there is also a marketing issue. Imagine, a state of the art car having a old technology in it..does not sell.

Brake performance do degrade over time. This is normal due to dust on disc, not rust on disc.

To clear the dust, perform full-braking at EMPTY roads occasionally. This would clear the dust & the rust (if any).

this is a very good advise. [thumbsup]

Break very hard occassionally and it will keep those squealing sound away .

my bad..

i been spraying WD40 every week on the disc to prevent rust... [speechless]

wah piangz , you may also apply heavy duty grease to your 4 tyres to prevent it from wear and tear .It may last the 10 years of your car life .

Bro , use a bit of commo sense don't overdo it.ASK around if you don't know . [hur]

Recently, I had changed by drum brake shoe and there is a tick tick sound, every time I apply brake.

Been back to the installer twice and they told me that this is normal as the new brake shoe need time to even out.

True [confused] Appreciate any advice. Thanks

Based on personal driving experience, good braking does not depend on disc or drum. Most of the cars I've driven are 2 disc 2 drum but the braking efficiency differs way a lot between different cars. Some really cannot make it, got to depress hard and always got panic when it doesn't seem to stop on time. Change new brake pad doesn't help. It's a Hyundai accent. The braking is the worst.

Other cars with 2 disc 2 drum are much better. Depress slightly and can feel the stopping power. It depends on how effective car manufacturers implement the system and not how good the system is.

if u think accent is bad...wait till u try the toyota camry's brakes (2005 model) dosent bite...I always think that I'm gonna crash...and once i drove from my hse in amk to west coast macs...performed quite abit of late/hard braking, upon arrival can smell the brakes abit burnt... [thumbsdown]

Camry is 'slow but steady' type of driving (ah pek or tow kay) who likes to arrive in comfort.Definitely not for F&F . [cool]

Neutral Newbie

IMHO, if you want to find out which is the best technology out there, just have a look at the F1 cars. Are they using Disc or Drum (because obviously cost is not a concern for them). They will use whatever is best..

Yr mech didn't adjust the brake shoes properly - the gap between the shoes in close position is just too wide from the drum curve surfaces. What happen is when you applied the brakes the shoes have to travel much more distant to come into contact with the drum surfaces. The sound you are hearing is make by the star adjuster that will keep on adjusting until the brake shoes reach a optimal position. Normally the mech will do adjustments before finally mounting the brake hub back to position.

Supercharged

would like to ask another question of brakes.

Any idea what is their lifespan?

30K or 50K etc mileage?

compare to Tyre, which actually is more important when comes to stopping.

mileage varies, if u engine brake all the time, can last u infinitely :p

both

Supercharged

it depends on how you drive and the make of the car

i been driving for 40k KM now and brakes are still good, and these are the original stock pads when i first bought the car.

i think pads can easily last for 60k KM.......

Tyres also same thing.... depends on how you drive and the make of the tyre.

i'm been using F1 tyres for 2 years now, 40k KM also, and they are still damm good. recently went to WS and check with mech. still good......

some drivers use tyres for 2 years, must change already........ due to the make of the tyre and how they drive.... some drive like madman.......

brakes no definite lifespan.

Depends on braking/driving methods.

normally during servicing just ask ur mech to visually inspect for ur disc brakes.

if rear are drums, after replacing 2x front disc brakes check them once.

Tires are >impt then brakes. stock brake pads have no problem stopping the car as they have been tested before by manufacturer

If you change stronger aftermarket brake pads, they will bite and lock the rotors faster.

But ur cheapo tires will have no grip(traction) and you will be like in an ice skating rink haha.

Then again, grippy tires give you noise + higher FC lor, so must find a balance.

If you a Fast and Furious driver, then you must consider upgrading pads+tires together. If you dun mod the car heavily then no pt getting those big brake kits. prehaps consider upsized rotors if you need then.

Will engine brake hurt the gear box ? [confused] More opposing force will be countered at the gears and repairing gear boxes is more expensive.

You think manufacturer don't consider MTBF?
