Easily available 10W30 lubes

This discussion is on easily available 10W30 lubes which also covers those you can get in JB.

In Singapore. It is indeed difficult to find 10W30 oil thanks to the brainwashing that thicker oil is better for hotter climates.

Main easily available 10W30 in Singapore is RP. Itself is a synthetic but my guess is this, if you are keen to run 10W30, most likely you will be keen to use a dino 10W30. Basically you are a cheapo. I know. I am one myself. laugh.gif

M1 10W30 is available but only when Carrefour or Giant puts them out. Usually you find the 5W30 though it is not bad by itself but I digress because we are looking for 10W30 lubes.

If you take the challenge to go up north, Shell and Esso-Mobil sells 10W30 lubes.

Firstly, Shell. I have a nice yellow bottle of Shell Helix Super 10W30 specially formulated for Kancils, Kenaris, Kelisas or any car from Perodua's stable. At MYR36, price is hard to beat until you find out it is only 3L. unimpressed.gif Yes, they use the standard 4L bottle of Helix but you notice the oil is not filled up to the cap's level. unsure.gif

Next is Mobil Super HP. Now this is somewhat a miystery. I have been to 2 Esso stations in JB. No Super HP available. I would guess it should be available in a Mobil station scholar.gif. I have not seen the bottle yet but from the discussions in Autoworld forums, it should be 4L at MYR32-36. Mobil Super HP 10W30 specs are HERE.

Next is Ric-Tat I think. I last went there and he has 4L bottles of Toyota Genuine Motor Oil 10W30 there. The price is in the teen dollars. That makes it pretty much a bargain. TGMO is rumored to be made by Exxon-Mobil so it could be Mobil Super HP but this is not confirmed.

Currently, I'm using Citgo Supergard 10W30 and it is only available through one individual online. So far so good.

5W30 is not good in shear resistance compared to 10W30. Synthetic is always better dino 5W30 in shear resistance but still if it is 10W30, it has better shear resistance whether it is dino or synthetic. That is why the popular RP grade is 10W30.

If you go up one more level to ultimate shear resistance, it will be 15W30 but there is no such thing as 15W30. All the 15W30 are SAE30 straight weight oil. This oil is the most resistant to shearing but your fuel economy will suffer.

Interesting.....thought that 5W, 10W etc...got to do with the bottom temperature. 30, 40 , 50 and 60 got to do with the pressue gap or mileage between the piston liner and rings. The said shearing is SJ, SL and SM,and shell date, which is ulmost in looking for the oil and were never mentioned in all the posts here.....

Interesting....

Yes, it has to do with the bottom temperature or in oil speak, low temperature pumpability but this comes with the addition of viscosity index improvers (VII). VIIs break down easily in high temperature and the oil gets sheared as a result.

In our climate, we should aim for the oils with the lowest VII because we don't need low temperature pumpability. These oils will be the most shear resistant. The most shear resistant 30wt is the monograde SAE30 but this is damn difficult to find locally. SAE30 has no VIIs at all which explains it and it also produces the lowest wear if you compare it side-by-side with a 5W30 and 10W30.

However, even though it is great for the engine, monogrades do not produce the fuel economy benefits that come with multigrades. This has already been proven.

Interesting...thanks...trying to recall those old racing days(20+ years ago) when we were only required 5W during the winter season racing or have warm air sent into the engine to circulate before starting, when we use 10W or 15W. This is because we use the do not want to seize the engine...interesting....maybe need to read more about it myself.

Hey Bro....I remember you mentioned this before but I can't seem to find the thread...you mentioned some differences in the Mobil 1 API SM and SL ratings right? Can you advise again?

I bought API SL the previous round but only able to get API SM Mobil 1 for this current promotion at Giant.unsure.gif
