Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 18, 2003 Share January 18, 2003 (edited) If your car is fuel injected, you won't be able to start once the tube is disconnected as the air-flow sensor cannot sense moving air. Clean it with the engine switched off. Edited January 18, 2003 by Mikeckchong

Yeobh 4th Gear January 19, 2003 Share January 19, 2003 For those who wish to DIY cleaning your car intake plenum, make sure you are using the right cleaning solvent. Wrong cleaning agent can burn a big hole in your pocket Please read this paragraph extract from a motor magazine articles. Hope this helps "Using conventional aerosol carburetor cleaning solvents on fuel injection throttle plates, for example, can be an extremely expensive mistake. Although strong solvents instantly dissolve gum, varnish and carbon from throttle plates and bores, they also dissolve throttle shaft seals, throttle position sensors or (when applicable) the Teflon from the air inlet horn! Nevertheless, specially formulated throttle body solvents do as good of a job without causing potential driveability complaints"
Turbobrick Neutral Newbie January 19, 2003 Share January 19, 2003 Thanks for the advice Yeo, best way is still to remove the throttle body and clean it separately from the intake. At least then all the crap won't get into the combustion chamber
Yeobh 4th Gear January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 Yes Turbobrick, you are right, if time permits. For best result, get all the dismantled components into an ultrasonic cleaning tank. Cleaning manually will be very time consuming, that is the reasons why almost all shops in Singapore prefer the instant-solution by using aerosol can carburetor cleaner. Cleaning the throttle plate is only one of the many tasks requires within the ?tune-up? job on fuel injection cars. The other areas that also need cleaning are the intake manifolds, fuel injection common rail, fuel injectors , intake & exhaust valves and the exhaust re -circulation valve etc. All these can be achieved by running the engine and at the same time introduce cleaning solvent into the fuel system and spraying solvent into the intake manifold . The cleaning task is all taken care by a solvent circulation machine that is hook up to the fuel system. HTH
