Advice on Throttle Body servicing

Hi pals,

Yesterday one of lights in my car panel lighted up. Today the mechanic told me the throttle body is dirty and needs servicing.

Just wondering how many km does your car go before the throttle body needs servicing. Mine just about hit the 30km mark. Does such servicing interfere with any part of the functions of the engine? If it doesn't I am thinking of bringing them to a neighbourhood workshop which should be cheaper.

Also has the dirtiness of the throttle body got anything to do with the petrol we are using? Previously I heard from others that the lower the octane the dirtier the fuel. Previously i did use 95 octane before.....so i was wondering whether this has any impact.

Are you using K&N filter? Usually it is due to the the fine dirt that went pass the filter that cause the throttle body to get dirty.....

By the way, what car are you driving?

If the agent says throttle body is dirty, believe them, moreover it is normal for throttle body to be dirty and cleaning it is a very minor job.....thumbsup.giflaugh.gif

Mine, being a turbo car, get dirty very frequently and I clean the throttle body like once or twice every month.....sweatdrop.gif

This is for my car, it should be the same as yours. Look for the intake pipe, and follow it to the engine. Take note last part where the rubber tube joins a metal contraption just before the engine block. That metal contraption should be the throttle body. The rubber tube is fastened usually by a hose clip. Loosen the clip and gently work out the tube from the throttle body.

Once removed, you should see that the hole going into the engine is blocked by a flat piece of metal. That's the throttle 'butterfly'. Most of the time, the butterfly is a bit dirty. sometimes it can be VERY dirty. You can clean it by spraying carburettor cleaner (make sure it's stated that it's safe for fuel injectors) with short spurts.

Final step is to reattach the hose.
