Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Author Share January 17, 2003 Hi Esky, Hmm.. Looking at the economic situation, I guess I have to agree with your suggestion Where can I get the metal or plastic airbox that you have mentioned? How abt the airfilters with plastic heat shields? Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Share January 17, 2003 >>Another possibly cheaper way of DIY cold-air intake is to get those cone filter with a plastic shield around the whole filter, Believe me, there's a Malaysian guy who used a plastic pail of suitable size, cut a hole at the bottom to fit in the cone and use it as a heat shield cone enclosure! He, of course, wrap the pail with heat insulating foam too.
Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Author Share January 17, 2003 I guess somthing like that will be more presentable Any ideas where to buy in SG? Any comments on the Ractive Airfilter?
Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Share January 17, 2003 Definitely more presentable but it will still be hidden from view! Unless for some reason you want to leave it outside. I thot the inlet is a bit small, a potential resistance for air flow. You may argue that flow will be faster but once it goes into a bigger volume space, speed quickly dies down. Whatever venturi effect it may create will be broken by the filter media.

Esky Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Share January 17, 2003 I've seen this kind of shielded cone filters at just about every accessories shop around JB... but of coz a lot of them are also lauya ones that only look good but don't filter as good... Maybe u can get a good cone filter, like K&N, to start with, and then DIY yr own wrap around heat shield with aluminium or stainless steel sheet? Lester Neutral Newbie January 19, 2003 Share January 19, 2003 (edited) Hi there Torquelover I was using the cheapo Simota cone filter with heat shield. From there, I directed a 3" hose from outside to the heat shield body. Two things obtained: Cold Air Intake Insulated air box 1/3 of original size. I used Simota filter cos I did an experiment on my own b4 I fitted it on. It could filter up to 25um of particle at a controlled suction pressure of 15psi (If I remember correctly) Here's a pic of it b4 the things was finally up and running. The insulation looks crappy cos it wasn't wrapped properly as yet. But the idea is to direct cold air in, minimise the time air stays in the air box and the inlet of the connecting hose to restrict water from ponding or getting sucked into the system. One thing to bear in mind is you need to clean your air filter more often than ever. Regards Lester Edited January 19, 2003 by Lester
Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 20, 2003 Author Share January 20, 2003 Hi Lester, Cool stuff Where did you get the Simota enclosed filter? I am searching for a similar setup. But I have an additional challenge to get a custom intake pipe as my OEM pipe is taking a long distance to the throttle body. TL
Esky Neutral Newbie January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 Lester, where did u get the filtration test done?? How did the Simota perform compared to the OEM filter, and good ones like K&N?
Lester Neutral Newbie January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 Hi there Torquelover I got the item in JB. It's widely available in accessories shop over there. Should cost bout RM$50 to RM$75, depending on where you go. My findings are shared with all as information and not as a form of data or findings for whatever purpose there might be. Lester Neutral Newbie January 20, 2003 Share January 20, 2003 Hi there ESKY It was done in the convenience of my ex work plc, in a chemical laboratory!I didn't do any test on OEm cost it's a drop in filter into the OEM airbox. I din compare with K&N cos it wasn't available for my vehicle back then and I had to wait for a month for it to deliver. My findings are shared with all as information and not as a form of data or findings for whatever purpose there might be.
