Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 13, 2003 Author Share January 13, 2003 BMC - www.bmcairfilters.com Viper - www.performanceairfilters.com The BMC is quoted to increase BHP by ard 11 horses for my car (dyno tested). Found an agent in Malaysia carrying the BMCs (Speed Zone in KL). Short of paying him a visit, guess I have to rely on online shops in the Euro Zone. Too bad I am driving the Citroen. All the performance parts are made and sold in Europe. Dont have the HKS & the Blitz to play with
Esky Neutral Newbie January 14, 2003 Share January 14, 2003 Well, u can always DIY a bit and adapt the cone or drop-in filters to fit your car!
Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 14, 2003 Author Share January 14, 2003 Any recommendation for a good mechanic to help me custom make my induction kit - piping and all. Thinking of poping over to KL to get the BMC filter.
Esky Neutral Newbie January 15, 2003 Share January 15, 2003 I'm not too sure about Citroen's intake design, but I remember once seeing a ZX's engine bay... not a very nice sight, coz the air is piped from the front to the back, "emergency corner" for 180 degs back to the front, and then ANOTHER 180 degs before going into the throttle body! Is what I described correct? The accessories guys can probably adapt another car's intake pipe onto yr Citroen, which I think is the most challenging part. Once they find one that suits yr car, finding a cone filter for it shouldn't be much of a problem.
Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 15, 2003 Author Share January 15, 2003 (edited) The intake design for Xsara is relatively simple. A 90 degree pipe is sufficient to attach the air filter to the throttle body Looking for a good mechanic to do a mandrel bent 3" intake pipe for me. I have attached a pic of the desired results Edited January 15, 2003 by Torquelover
Esky Neutral Newbie January 15, 2003 Share January 15, 2003 Maybe u can try your luck with the mandrel-bent piping at exhaust shops. Accessories shops usually sell mandrel-bent intake pipes expensively, especially those chromy, shiny ones...
Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 15, 2003 Share January 15, 2003 Won't the cone filter end up sucking more hot air? Since it's so near the exhaust manifold? I've done that on my car too and the low-end suffers big time! Throttle response was very good though and the top end improves somewhat. Overall, not worth the effort as it makes start-stop driving difficult. Since you love torque so much, it's not a good idea. In case you're suggesting a heat shield, I had that too. My take is if you want it to work properly, you've gotta design a heat shield to isolate the cone filter completely from the engine heat, with the opening scooping cool air from outside. You can position the opening close to an air scoop, if you have one. That metal tube looks chio but transmit heat easily and has to be wrapped with heat insulators or use a plastic tube instead. Just my $0.02.
Torquelover Neutral Newbie January 16, 2003 Author Share January 16, 2003 (edited) Thanks. Taking in heat from the engine bay was also me concern. The filter in the proposed installation is located in a Carbon Fiber heat shield and it has a cool air intake piping to the front of the car. In the default Citroen air intake layout, the air box is directly above the exhaust piping. There is a air intake pipe all the way to the front bonnet which sucks in cool air. But in the factory layout, by the time the air enters the throttle, it is already quite hot. I believe the car was designed for cold weather in Europe so the layout helps in heating up the COLD air sucked in from the outside of the car. Anyway, my little project is as follows :- 1. get my hands on the BMC airbox. Got a quote in Malaysia (RM 1300 ) Too ex IMHO 2. get a 90 degree Samco silicon host to connect the air box to the throttle body. In place of the steel piping in the diagram 3. use the existing Citroen intake to direct cool air in Sillypore into the air box. Challenge Am I able to drill 2 holes into the Samco hose for the idle vacuum tube and the engine breather tube? Hope car lovers out there can exist me in my little project Edited January 16, 2003 by Torquelover
Madarmour Neutral Newbie January 16, 2003 Share January 16, 2003 >>The filter in the proposed installation is located in a Carbon Fiber heat shield and it has a cool air intake piping to the front of the car. That heat shield should be more aptly named as a heat shielded enclosure. It has to be completely separated. Any lobang, and the hot air blown in from the fan will circulate everywhere in the engine bay, pass the shield. I've done temperature measures and found that when stationary, hot air blown by the fan goes everywhere and the temperature can be close to 50 degrees C! Your little project seems to be better. By using the original air box, it is already a heat insulated enclosure. It may be difficult to create air-tight holes on the Samco hose for the vacuum and engine breather tube. It may be easier to use a metal tube and wrap it with heat insulators. Of if you can lay your hand to 3" curved plastic tube(heat stable)..... You should come to one of our meet-ups. I'm sure someone can give you pointers. If you are free, you can drop by my office in Bedok for some discussion.

Esky Neutral Newbie January 17, 2003 Share January 17, 2003 Quote 1. get my hands on the BMC airbox. Got a quote in Malaysia (RM 1300 ) Too ex IMHO Better get those cheapo metal or plastic airbox. I think the BMC one is made of carbon fibre, and therefore the steep price! The interesting part to me about the BMCs from what I've read on its site is its Venturi intake pipe between the air filter and the throttle body. Supposed to accelerate the air speed a bit. Another possibly cheaper way of DIY cold-air intake is to get those cone filter with a plastic shield around the whole filter, and get a pipe to plumb the distance between the bumper (cold air source) and the plastic heat shield's front opening. ↡ Advertisement
