Car vibrating badly at speeds above 90km/h

Hi guys,

My 3yrs old Ignis is vibrating badly at speeds above 90km/h, the vibration can be felt by the hands(on steering wheel) and legs(on acclerator). [sweatdrop][sweatdrop][:/]

Could it be due to worn tyres, balancing or alignment? The tyres are 3yrs old and have done 42K km. On a straight road, I have to steer slightly to the right or else the car will slowly veer to the left. [:/][:/]

The current size is 165/70/R14, can I fit a 195/65/14 tyre?

Planning to visit the tyre shop at Tampines(the big shell petrol koisk), any comments on that place? How is their pricing?

Thanks :)

The most accurate balancing is the type done with the wheel & tyre attached to the hub/brake assembly i.e. they are not removed from the vehicle. Another thing, this may seem ridiculous, check and tighten the wheel nuts. They do sometimes become loose. Other than that you may want to have the drive shafts and wheel bearings checked as well. But have the front wheels balanced the normal way first to see if that will cure the problem.

Alignment & balancing is not the same. Do a proper tire balancing for at least the front 2 tires & all 4 will b better.

If "off-wheel" cannot solve the problem, do the "on-wheel" type.

If u recently had the alignment done then just do the balancing.

If not do the alignment also.

Tire balancing, rotation & alignment sud b done every 10K km.

How much does 4 wheel balancing usually cost? $15-$20?? I just did my 40K servicing and the ball bearings are still in good condition.

Tks [:)]

"vibrating badly"

Hi! there, Garlic,

Like what the rest have suggested, send your wheels for balancing, see if it's warped or dented.

If nothing's wrong, get a mechanic to check your suspension system for worn parts.

Do 'off wheel' balancing first, if it does not help then you may need to go for high speed 'on wheel' balancing.

But your tires should be coming to end of life at 42k, for well maintain tires ie. pressure, rotation, you may get 50-60k.

If you're veering slowly to the left on highway may be normal as most road are design to slope downwards from right to left for drainage purpose. The car will steer immediately to one side if you have alignment problem.

You can't fit 195/65R14, I think you should be able to fit 185/60R14 depending on your rim size, which is called a plus zero sizing up. Tire shop should be able to advise.

Supersonic

it's a simple case of tyre out of balance. but instead of wasting your $ trying to balance a tired 3yr old 42k tyre, i'd suggest u juz change to a new set. 14" tyre probably cost abt $80/each and balancing is included in the price anyway. and no, not advisable to change to a diff width & profile if you're keeping to the stock 14" configuration.

Vibration may be solved by wheel balancing and not related to alignment. Alignment is the solution if your car in veering off to one side.

You may want to do a search in MCF, remember there were some discussion on this topic.

BTW, My Suburu Impreza AWD (All Wheel drive) Wagon Mileage is 115000km and our last car servicing by the agent commented that we dun have to change our tyres cos the tyres thread is still not worn out. My wife is the one whos driving! So maybe it depends on the driver driving (you cheonging [lipsrsealed] ?) and your cars model (is yours a Mitsu Evo?)or maybe bcos of lady driver or AWD . Regards.
