Genie47 1st Gear August 5, 2005 Share August 5, 2005 Viscosity Index Improver. Helps the oil to maintain cold temperature pumpability. Compare 15W40 and 10W30, they have more or less the same amount of VII. Explains why they are favored by the oil enthusiastic drivers. In the US, 10W30 and 15W40 enjoy economies of scale. Mostly sold cheaply.

Genie47 1st Gear August 5, 2005 Share August 5, 2005 10W30 usually priced cheaper. But if both the same price get the 10W30. There are no winters here.

Genie47 1st Gear August 5, 2005 Share August 5, 2005 Difference between 5W and 10W is that 5W cranks easier in the cold but even at normal tropical conditions like this, the 5W will still crank up easier. Other than that, both will become 30wt at operating temperature.

Genie47 1st Gear August 5, 2005 Share August 5, 2005 Ahbuden? You buy car and the the dealer tell you to use only XX brand petrol only ah? You buy washing machine and Harvey-Norman tells you to use XX brand detergent only? An engine only cares whether the oil is at the correct level so that the oil pump can start pumping and effect lubrication. That is all it cares about. Country, brand, dollars spent doesn't matter to it. Must at least have oil and it will be happy to move.
