SPARK Motorsports held its first drift clinic on Sunday, where 15 local drifters were treated to a day of sideways action with 2004 D1GP champion Ryuji Miki, Singapore's leading drifter Ivan Lim and aspiring Formula Drift USA driver Charles Ng.

Held at the Changi Exhibition Centre grounds, it was a hot sunny day as the participants did their practice runs. A brief late afternoon shower cooled the weather just before the friendly competition was held.

I was hoping it would be tandem battles for the competition, but it turned out each participant was given three individual runs and the judges Miki and Ng decided the top three.

Registration for this day-long drift clinic was $350 per person, minus the cost of tyres and prepping of car. That's quite a good deal!

Based on what I understand, it's not cheap to rent the entire Changi Exhibition Centre grounds like that. Another local drift clinic charged about $600 for the same venue. Of course, there are other differing factors like instructors or other opportunities that might lead off from attending the workshop.

Eventually, it was Jason Tan of Team Driftmasters who won. His performance was quite steady and I think it was quite clear that he would be placed within the top three.

I thought Ah Wee did quite well too, pity he didn't make it to the top three. It was Andre Goh and Andy Gas who finished in second and third instead.

The winners received cash prizes - $700, $500 and $300. Not bad, at least the registration fee was covered!

Miki, Ng and Lim are taking part in Formula Drift Malaysia this weekend (19-21 Dec), so this clinic was timely for them to gain some practice time before they head up to Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur later this week.

SPARK Motorsports expressed the intention to have a drift clinic annually. I think it's great that more of such clinics are being organised, so drift enthusiasts can have someplace legal to get practice.

In fact, local drift forum Drift Garage is holding its own club competition in Malaysia this weekend too.

Passion does drive wonders.

  • A sole-ful tribute

Car enthusiasts are an emotional bunch. So, I naturally develop feelings for things on wheels, be it four wheels or two. However, I was surprised to discover that I had become attached to my old pair of sneakers, whose soles are so worn that it hurts to wear them.  That is the unequivocal signal to retire them. But I must say "Thank you" before bidding them goodbye. The laceless design is convenient, saving time when you need to rush off in the morning Through thick and

    Carpark Review: Downtown East

It used to be most associated with Wild Wild Wet (or Escape Theme Park if you're of a certain vintage) but now is more typically visited by those looking to shop at the NTUC Fairprice of E!Hub or Don Don Donki. Downtown East spans a total of 147,000sqm and was officially opened on 5 November 2000 (according to Wikipedia). For those residing in the far east of Pasir Ris, this is likely to be their port of call for the grocery run (the other typical location being Loyang East). But just how g

    Cleaning is relaxing?

Every once in awhile, I find myself watching 20-minute long videos on Youtube on something that most people will probably find quite bizarre: Carpet cleaning videos.  (This video has 5.4m views!!!!) It's... a particular kind of Youtube rabbit hole. I concede that.  However, I must say that I find such videos strangely relaxing and soothing. Beyond the ASMR component of it, I do find something quite nice about the specificity and particularity of such videos, and in some

ERP 2.0: Possible positions for your processing unit

Your OBU's processing unit isn't always mounted on the passenger footwell. Depending on the car that you drive, more than one option may be available! Since November 2023, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been gradually replacing in-vehicle units (IUs) with the new on-board units (OBU). The OBU will pave the way for smoother traffic as we transition to the new ERP 2.0 system that is based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology.  The OBU comprises three parts: An
