Talk about a diesel powered car some 20 years ago would bring about the image of black smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe. However, today's modern diesel car engine is nothing like the smoky, dirty motors of the past. They are extremely clean, powerful and efficient. The Audi A5 3.0 TDI quattro that was launched in Singapore some time in Mid 2009 can testify to this statement.

Back to this entry's topic, a new Audi A3 1.6 TDI has just been introduced in UK. The 1.6 TDI engine generates 105PS and 250Nm of peak torque. It propels the A3 from 0 to 62mph in 11.4s. It's combined fuel economy figure is an impressive 74.3mpg and Carbon dioxide production is just 99g/km. The key elements responsible for the efficiency gains in the most advanced 1.6 TDI to date include a modified final drive ratio for the standard five-speed manual transmission, a reduced ride height, under-body revisions to reduce aerodynamic drag and the use of slightly smaller 15-inch alloy wheels shod with low rolling resistance tyres. A start-stop system is also incorporated in the TDI application and it conserves fuel by cutting engine power at idle when the clutch pedal is released and the gear lever is in its neutral position. The engine is restarted when the clutch is depressed.

Recently, we have seen more diesel offerings in Singapore, such as the Mercedes C200 CDI. It wouldn't be a surprise if we see the A3 1.6 TDI in Premium Automobile's showroom in the coming year. It could be a sensible choice if buyers are ready to cast away the impression of diesel engines of the past.
