'Downsized' Fiat 500 on the way!

In the world of modern technology, downsizing is the word. I could recall that twenty years ago, the size of a handphone could make it double up as a self defense tool. Fast forward to the 21st century, a handphone could fit into your right pocket with ease and could perform functions beyond your imagination.

Back to the automobile industry, the word 'downsizing' does not refer to the physical size of the car, but points to the capacity of the engine. The founder of this trend is none other than Volkswagen, whose renowned 1.4L twincharged direct injection engine has won the 'International Engine of the Year' award for 2009.

Volkswagen is not alone these days. Fiat takes a further step and in my opinion, embraces the concept of miniaturization with its upcoming 900cc two-cylinder engine. The new powerplant is Euro5 compliant and makes use of Fiat's Multiair and turbocharing technologies. It will make its debut in the Fiat 500 come 2010, and other A and B segment vehicles in the firm's stable. Two variants of the engine will be launched, generating 80 bhp and 105 bhp respectively. They will be followed by a 65 bhp naturally aspirated unit and a version propelled by compressed natural gas, CNG.

The two potter is lighter and more compact in design as compared to a 4 cylinder engine with similar power. The C02 emission and fuel consumption figures would probably bring a smile to the faces of the folks at Greenpeace. More importantly, such an engine would give the Singapore driver a reason to smile when it comes to road tax payment. [:)]

I don't think there's anything to smile about when the 500 is selling in the region of 70k.

  • A 20-year journey, an old passion rekindled

For us 90s babies, the Holy Trinity of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network formed a big part of our childhood. The internet was just about coming into fruition, with the rise of a plethora of websites with numerous entertaining flash games and of course, the early days of YouTube. And though those things have come and gone, one thing in my life remained constant: My love for Pokemon. I first got into Pokemon 20 years ago, and I remember exactly how it went down. Let me set the

YOLO or FOMO? The perils of overpacked holidays

You've finally escaped your daily grind, jetted off to paradise, and now you're... exhausted? Welcome to the modern vacation conundrum. In the words of a well-spoken colleague, this is "where YOLO meets FOMO in an epic battle for your precious holiday time". The overplanning trap Many of us are hardwired for productivity because we're pressed for time. Everything from errands to visits to workouts must be scheduled in a bid to save time. At times, it seems like the only goal is to

Motorcycle riding is a sensory experience beyond the exhaust

Riding a motorcycle is like taking your nose on a wild adventure. You're cruising down the road, expecting to smell nothing except exhaust fumes and perhaps rubbish, when suddenly - bam! - you're hit with the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling char kway teow from a nearby coffeeshop. Heck, you might even catch a whiff of someone's fancy perfume as you zip by. It's like your bike has magical powers, transforming an ordinary ride into a sensory rollercoaster. It's these unexpected olfactory deli

Less caffeine leads to more dreams

There's nothing like a double espresso to kickstart your morning, especially if it's extracted from medium- or dark-roasted beans. What a tasty way to begin the day. I enjoy coffee, but I'm not a caffeine addict so it's not a must for me to consume. In fact, lately, I've only been drinking it once or twice a week - doing this ensures that when I do drink it (to power my way through a hectic day), the caffeine kick will be well and truly felt. I did not stop drinking coffee thrice a day
