Ford Motor Company announced that it has settled all the substantive commercial terms with China's Geely Holding Group Company Limited on the prospected sale of its Volvo unit.

Ford commented that some works such as final documentation, financing and government approvals need to be done before the deal is sealed. However, the company anticipates that a definitive sale agreement will be signed in the first quarter of 2010, with closing of the sale likely to occur in the second quarter of the same year.

The Detroit automaker added that it would continue to cooperate with Volvo Cars in several areas after the sale, but it does not plan to retain any shares in the business. It is believed that Geely is offering the U.S. automaker around $2 billion dollars for the Swedish brand, which is less than a third of what Ford paid for the it a decade ago. With the prospected sale of Volvo, Ford will offload the last brand in the Premier Automotive Group that also included Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin.

Personally, I feel that such a move will not do any good to the image of Volvo. Geely's brand image is that of a basic budget vehicle while Volvo has a strong continental image with an emphasis on safety. In an image conscious society like Singapore, I am not sure how many buyers would be willing to fork out a premium amount for a car whose parent company is associated with budget products.

Volvo has some interesting lineups in the coming year, such as the S60. It would be sad that the sales of these wonderful vehicles be jeopardized by the potential Geely takeover. I hope that the sale of Volvo to Geely would not take place eventually.

Ownership and branding is totally a different thing.

Jaguar was taken over by TATA and resulted in the new awesome looking design.

Lotus still does not come cheap and now is pushing back into F1.

Unless Geely is so stupid to change the Volvo brand name.

We can most probably see the improvement in the performance, safety and comfort level of future Geely with the association of Volvo.

We have seen that with Mazda.

With this take-over, Geely will improve by leaps and bounds. Volvo will stay as per it is without the massive R&D powers of Ford.

  • Japan: The trend that became a turn-off

Ahh Japan. The destination that many travellers desire. The perennial trending subject on social media. Japanese cuisine, culture, quirks, technology, and everything kawaii have inspired endless posts, stories, reels, YouTube videos, and TikToks. If one didn't know better, you'd think it was the dream destination on this planet. While I love the food, the service and the shopping, the sheer number of tourists (me included) has become a turn-off. I'm not talking about those who inconven

Less caffeine leads to more dreams

There's nothing like a double espresso to kickstart your morning, especially if it's extracted from medium- or dark-roasted beans. What a tasty way to begin the day. I enjoy coffee, but I'm not a caffeine addict so it's not a must for me to consume. In fact, lately, I've only been drinking it once or twice a week - doing this ensures that when I do drink it (to power my way through a hectic day), the caffeine kick will be well and truly felt. I did not stop drinking coffee thrice a day

Journey to the West: First Steps in Southwestern China, Pt. 1

It used to be that when a person was visiting China for the first time, the natural choice was Beijing. No better way to learn about a country than a visit to its capital, amirite? Having had their fill of Peking duck and climbed the Great Wall of China, the next places they would likely look at are those on the east coast - Shanghai, Nanjing, perhaps Harbin. In recent times though, the southwestern parts of China have gotten much coverage on social media. Chongqing, the country’s largest c

    Curry does not exist?

Curry. When many of us think of Indian food, we naturally think of curry.  Except, well, 'curry' isn't actually a thing. Not the word, and not even technically the food that we think of.  Many of us probably think of curry as some sort of dish that has a gravy or sauce. But that is in fact a generalisation of a wide variety of Indian dishes, and also a decidedly Western invention intrinsically tied to India's Colonial past. 'Curry' as a word doesn't actually exist in the languages spok
