TL;DR - A horrifying accident involving 14 cars occurred along Bartley Viaduct just two days after Christmas.

If you happened to drive along the Bartley Viaduct on 27th Dec, you would have witnessed a rare (not to mention expensive for those involved) occurrence.

It's not every day you get to see 14 cars collided into one another in a straight line.

There's even a bird's eye view of the incident!

Watch this 56-second video to see how it looks.

What happened?

A chain reaction collision involving 14 cars occurred, leading to a long pile-up on the rightmost lane of Bartley Viaduct.

We spotted a few familiar models in the carnage.

  • Honda Fit
  • Honda Vezel
  • Toyota Prius Alpha
  • Toyota Altis
  • Toyota Vios

All the cars seemed to have suffered some form of structural damage, especially the ones sandwiched in the middle.

For all drivers who do their daily commute via the Bartley Viaduct, take note of this stretch of road. There are no speed cameras there and a perfect spot for cars to speed and/or tailgate.

So, who pays for the damages incurred?

The rule of thumb is that the first driver who caused the first collision that led to all subsequent crashes is the party at fault.

While tailgating might not be an illegal offence in Singapore, insurers might not look lightly at your claims if you met an accident due to tailgating a vehicle ahead of you.

To identify the liable party in a chain reaction accident, it is important to reconstruct how the accident happened - Whoever’s actions caused the initial accident will be the responsible driver. There are even some cases where multiple drivers may be responsible.

Which is why presenting quality footage to your insurers could potentially absolve you of any blame. Check out Sgcarmart's best car cameras for 2023!

Good luck to the last of the 14 cars.

For any inexperienced drivers, you should have learnt this during your Basic Theory. A motorist should stay at least 2 car lengths or 2 seconds behind any vehicle in front of them.

Excess is their money making strategy.

The more they crash the more the cash!

I am going into the rental PHV business.

Only bad drivers are welcome to join.

Let us know when your phv rental business is up.👌🏻

Perhaps one day I’ll be driving phv; please give me good rental price and discount off excess.🙏🏻

And please no T-brand ( or W-brand or sub-prime C-brand) tyres on the vehicles.🙏🏻😣🏻

Incorrect, refer to Barometer of Liability Agreement (BOLA) guide - can juz google.
Fact is that the driver of the vehicle behind is 100% liable for losses incurred by the vehicle immediately in front only.
Reason: to avoid costly litigation for collision damages.

So it's not first/last car's insurance bao ka liao, unless got evidence that nothing in front of first car and the fella jam brake and cause the chain collision - may be hard to prove.

  • Hard Enduro: The ultimate motorsport?

I enjoy motorsports of all kinds - four wheels good, two wheels better. And while watching them on TV (okay let's be honest Youtube, who even watches TV nowadays) is fun, getting to partake in anything even remotely resembling it, even in a highly truncated, totally superficial manner, is even more exciting.  Earlier this year, I did a short 2.5 day off-road riding 'tour', and it was easily the hardest, most physically demanding 2.5 days I've ever spent on a motorbike. It really gives you a

    Relaxing to restoration videos

There are tons of YouTube videos one could watch to unwind and decompress at the end of the day, perhaps while having dinner. You could watch one of those nature documentaries, travel vlogs featuring beautiful beaches, or perhaps a cooking show. But there's something strangely therapeutic about watching restoration videos. And the channel I find myself drawn to is Fumicho Restoration, a channel full of videos of old motorcycles being repaired and essentially reborn. I'm not even familiar wi

    A sole-ful tribute

Car enthusiasts are an emotional bunch. So, I naturally develop feelings for things on wheels, be it four wheels or two. However, I was surprised to discover that I had become attached to my old pair of sneakers, whose soles are so worn that it hurts to wear them.  That is the unequivocal signal to retire them. But I must say "Thank you" before bidding them goodbye. The laceless design is convenient, saving time when you need to rush off in the morning Through thick and
