Sleepy or drunk? Volkswagen Jetta driver slides across 3 lanes and hits truck on AYE

While we don’t know what type of influence the driver was under in this accident, it definitely was not a good one.

At around 8pm on Saturday (Jan 15), a driver spotted a Volkswagen Jetta driving diagonally in its lane on the AYE.

Situated on the right lane, the silver car struggles to maintain its position in the middle of the lane. The vehicle veers slightly to the right now and then, with the driver attempting to correct its direction.

Seconds later, disaster strikes as the Jetta veers too far to the right, hitting the road divider of the expressway.

The impact of the hit sends the car flying forward, pushing it in the opposite direction.

The car flies across 3 lanes and makes its second hit with a large white truck.

Both vehicles come to an immediate stop in the middle of the expressway as the cam car drives away.

What happened?

While there has not been a statement on what happened with the Jetta driver, netizens were quick to offer up their theories.

#1: Driver was sleepy

The most popular theory was that the driver was too sleepy.

Netizens had noted that right before the incident, the car was already constantly veering towards the right of the lane.

This could signify that the driver could have been falling asleep at the wheel.

Some even shared their personal experiences and anecdotes about driving while being exhausted (which is not something you should do!).

#2: Driver was drunk

The second theory was that the driver could have been drinking before this incident.

Again, netizens related the shaky driving before the incident to the influence of alcohol. They reasoned that there was no way a driver would drive in the first lane if he knew that he was tired beforehand.

On the other hand, if one had been drinking, the driver could still take the first lane if he felt fine (despite his judgment being impaired).

#3: Driver was distracted

The last theory was that the driver could have been distracted by his phone.

In this scenario, it would make sense that the Jetta was driving in the first lane as the driver was physically okay.

He could have been answering a call or texting – something that some of us are guilty of doing when we are on the expressway.

While we don’t know for sure which of these theories are true, the fact is that a driver should not be on the road if he is exhausted or has been drinking.

  • Japan is weird. I love it (Part 4)

I recently finished watching Shōgun (yes, I'm a little bit late to the party). Released earlier this year, Shōgun has become an utter revelation - going on to win 18 Emmys at this year's Primetime and Creative Arts Emmys, making it the most awarded single season of television in history. It's also the first non-English-language series to win Outstanding Drama Series.  And it truly is outstanding, fully deserving of all the awards that it has garnered.  As you would expect, the show rev

    A right-handers world

I was mid-way through a bike ride in Ladahk, feeling the ache in my right hand, when a thought occurred to me: “Huh, how come the throttle is always on the right side of all bikes?”  Statistically, about 90% of people in the world are right-handed. Full disclosure: I am right-handed, part of this largely ignorant majority.  And if you think about it, some things are designed clearly with that in mind.  Throttle on a motorcycle? Right hand. Accelerator pedal in a car? Right f

    Building a racing-themed watch!

This. This watch dial is the reason I started on this particular watch build... It all began when I came across someone's build that utilised the same dial - prior to this, I did not even know of the existence of a Walter Wolf Racing branded watch or dial. If you don't have any idea who or what Walter Wolf Racing is, here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "Walter Wolf Racing was a Formula One constructor active from 1977 to 1979, which won the first race the team entered. It was owne

My inexplicable attraction to instant food

Ready-to-eat microwaveable meals, instant noodles, plane food - these aren't typically the kinds of foods that people will spring for when given a choice. But for some reason, I actually enjoy eating foods like that, and would even find myself craving for them at times. I know, most of you would say it's the salt, seasoning, MSG, sugar and all the unhealthy flavourings that I'm hooked to. And you might be right - but I think it's more than that; there's something about eati
