An untimely explosion in a Bukit Batok HDB estate leaves a driver thanking the heavens for his life.

Just as the driver is about to turn into the estate's MSCP, he witnesses a mysterious flash in the sky.

Seconds later, the service road in front of him blows up in an explosion that could lead to some pretty severe injuries.

Thankfully, he slows down before entering the carpark due to the heavy weather conditions, which results in him avoiding the explosion seconds before it happens.

Honestly, how lucky can one be to avoid something like this?

Possible scenarios

While we don't know the specifics, here are some possible scenarios.

The most likely explanation for the cause of this explosion would be a lightning strike. While it is rare to witness a lightning strike in Singapore, the reality is that it's not impossible. Today, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS)'s lightning alert map indicates heavy thunderstorms around the Bukit Batok area, with lightning alerts every half an hour.

Another possibility would be that something could have fallen into the drain, which ignited a mini-explosion. It's not impossible, but many factors would have to be in place for this to occur.

The last possibility could be that the constant weather changes might have led to the blow-up. Heavy rainfall causes the entrapment of excess water under the surface of pavements and roads, which would boil when the weather suddenly begins to heat up. This phenomenon is known as 'thermal expansion, and it frequently occurs in areas with hot days and heavy rains. However, this is not likely to be the case because the explosion happened while it was still raining heavily.

Nevertheless, I hope that the driver is alright and did not suffer any injuries aside from getting the scare of his life. 😅

This is strange. The explosion came from below. Are there methane gas trapped under the drainage system?

According to an update from Today, it appears to have been caused by a flash fire. While we are not sure as to if the methane gas or aerosol came from the drainage system, the fire occurs when such gases are ignited.

The approach of the year-end holidays often also means the annual pilgrimage Singaporeans take to Japan to soothe their souls after a long year will soon kick into high season. (Just open any of your social media applications - Instagram, Facebook or TikTok - and you'll see.) For the many amongst us who can spare neither the financial expense nor the time, however, there's no reason to fret. I recently finished watching Shōgun (yes, I'm a little bit late to the party). Released earlier this year, Shōgun has become an utter revelation - going on to win 18 Emmys at this year's Primetime and Creative Arts Emmys, making it the most awarded single season of television in history. It's also the first non-English-language series to win Outstanding Drama Series.  And it truly is outstanding, fully deserving of all the awards that it has garnered.  As you would expect, the show rev

“WHAT’S A GOOD USERNAME?!” Such was the source of my agony as I was handed a pair of figurative keys to MyAutoBlog. I’d asked the colleague from IT who was helping me set up this account if I really had to make an account with my work email, hoping I could use the username that came with my personal MCF account instead. “yes”, in lowercase no less, was what I got. Oh well. After a good 10 minutes (I think), I decided on this username (a reference I hope someone gets), juvenile and

There are plenty of strange sports in this world. People running from bulls. People running after cheese. Power Slap.  But of course few places do weird quite like Japan. Introducing to you: Bo-taoshi.  The name means 'topple the pole', and that's exactly the name of the game. Except of course its never quite so simple.  You want teams? Oh, you get teams. 150 players, split into 75 offensive and 75 defensive - one holding your pole up, the other attacking another team to topple th
