Good news for people who like Toyota, their hybrid cars and statistics in general. Toyota had recently announced that by the end of July 2010, they have managed to sell 1,000,000 hybrid vehicles in Japan and this becomes a total of about 2,680,000 units of hybrids worldwide.

 

It seems that Toyota had launched its first hybrid vehicle in 1997. It was a Coaster Hybrid EV minibus and after that the floodgates opened up. Toyota then launched the first generation Prius which was so popular among a lot of Hollywood stars so that they look like they're going green and to date, the Prius has consistently topped the car sales charts in Japan (partly due to the tax breaks given and partly due to increased consumer awareness over there). Of course Toyota also produces various other hybrid passenger cars like the Lexus LS600h and also Camry hybrids. But of course, the Prius is the darling of Toyota's hybrid movement.

 

Anyway, the fact is that Toyota claims that their hybrids to date has helped offset 4,000,000 tons of CO2 emissions in Japan and another 15,000,000 tons worldwide. Each hybrid offset is compared to a car of similar class and size i.e a Lexus hybrid against a fully petrol powered Lexus, a Prius against a Corolla and so on. Of course, it would also depend on how the hybrid is driven. If it were driven by Lead Foot Larry, it may not help the environment as much as Toyota envisages. But it would still help a little due to tech like energy recuperating brake system that is used in these sort of cars.

 

It is because of this sort of statistics that Toyota intends to sell about 1,000,000 hybrids a year. This will help it reach manufacturer emissions control regulations that is actually much more important to their (or any other manufacturer

Prius to be made in Thailand

 

TOKYO - TOYOTA Motor will start producing the Prius hybrid in Thailand this year, stepping up overseas output of the fuel-sipping vehicles amid swelling global demand, reports said on Saturday.

 

Toyota, the front-runner in hybrid cars that use two power sources - a petrol engine and another source such as an electric motor - launched the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid car, in 1997.

 

It will make the latest model of the Prius in Thailand, the second hybrid car following the hybrid version of the Camry sedan, the Nikkei daily and Jiji Press said without citing sources.

 

Local subsidiary Toyota Motor Thailand Co will oversee the Prius production, with the technology-sensitive hybrid system including batteries and engines to be supplied from Japan, the reports said.

 

The world's biggest automaker wants eventually to export the hybrid cars from Thailand to quickly expanding Asian markets, the reports said. Sales of hybrids have been brisk in recent years because of high petrol prices and increasing public awareness of global warming.

 

Last year, Toyota recalled 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles to repair a flaw in the braking system, as part of around 10 million recalls worldwide that have tarnished its previously stellar reputation for quality. However, the Prius has retained the popularity, being the most-selling cars in Japan for the past year, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. -- AFP

Prius is second Thai made hybrid car after Camry hybrid. Sale of Thai made Camry hybrid in Thailand already surpassed non-hybrid model after Toyota extended warranty of battery from 5 years to 10 years with umlimited mileage for the first 5 years. Thai made Prius is expected to sell liked hot cake since the OTR price is around Baht 1.1M or about S$48K. Thailand will make Jass hybrid as well after it's launched in Japan as Fit hybrid this year end but no launch date and OTR price in Thailand announced yet.

    Relaxing to restoration videos

    A right-handers world

    I was mid-way through a bike ride in Ladahk, feeling the ache in my right hand, when a thought occurred to me: “Huh, how come the throttle is always on the right side of all bikes?”  Statistically, about 90% of people in the world are right-handed.
