blogentry-133713-0-32731100-1410683734_thumb.jpgThe Goods and Services Tax (GST) is set to kick off in April in Malaysia, and petrol is not going to be on the exempted list of basic necessities according to Royal Malaysian Customs Department senior assistant director Ishak Daud in Kuala Lumper recently. He was quoted that the 80 or so items that will be exempted would be revealed in October at Malaysia's 2015 Budget.

Currently, both RON 95 petrol and diesel are exempted from the sales tax which the 6% GST is supposed to take over from. Assuming the rate of fuel subsidy, which RON 95 petrol and diesel enjoy from the government now stays the same, expect their price to increase after April 2015. RON 97 prices would not be affected since the subsidy is minimal and is driven by market forces.

  • A sole-ful tribute

Car enthusiasts are an emotional bunch. So, I naturally develop feelings for things on wheels, be it four wheels or two. However, I was surprised to discover that I had become attached to my old pair of sneakers, whose soles are so worn that it hurts to wear them.  That is the unequivocal signal to retire them. But I must say "Thank you" before bidding them goodbye. The laceless design is convenient, saving time when you need to rush off in the morning Through thick and

The approach of the year-end holidays often also means the annual pilgrimage Singaporeans take to Japan to soothe their souls after a long year will soon kick into high season. (Just open any of your social media applications - Instagram, Facebook or TikTok - and you'll see.) For the many amongst us who can spare neither the financial expense nor the time, however, there's no reason to fret. Allow the mind some space to wander, and one will find there are many places on our sunny island tha

Christmas colours: What do they actually mean?

The members of the Sgcarmart media team recently put its heads together to prepare something special and festive for our readers and viewers - which you can both read about and watch on Instagram - and as we were sitting down to plan things out, we were faced at one point with a deceptively simple question: What are the different meanings behind the colours we associate with Christmas?  In my very non-expert eyes, three distinct colours stand out: Red, green and white primarily,

Japan is weird. I love it (Part 5)

There are plenty of strange sports in this world. People running from bulls. People running after cheese. Power Slap.  But of course few places do weird quite like Japan. Introducing to you: Bo-taoshi.  The name means 'topple the pole', and that's exactly the name of the game. Except of course its never quite so simple.  You want teams? Oh, you get teams. 150 players, split into 75 offensive and 75 defensive - one holding your pole up, the other attacking another team to topple th
