blogentry-133712-0-03821000-1385116343_thumb.jpgSome proposed technological innovations seem so far out that they are easy to reject out of hand. But sometimes, a new idea has a kernel of plausibility. Such is the case with a new project to develop a laser power generation system that its creator says could provide electricity for the grid, stand-alone power applications and even cars.

blogentry-133712-0-51174600-1385116352_thumb.jpgLaser Power Systems (LPS) from Connecticut, U.S.A, is developing a new method of automotive propulsion with one of the most dense materials known in nature - thorium.

blogentry-133712-0-36809900-1385116938_thumb.jpgThorium, a silvery-white metal, is a mildly radioactive element that is as abundant as lead. It is present in large quantities in India and is a much-touted stand in for uranium in nuclear reactors because its fission is not self-sustaining, a type of reaction called 'sub-critical'. Because thorium is so dense, it has the potential to produce tremendous amounts of heat. The company has been experimenting with small bits of thorium, creating a laser that heats water, produces steam and powers a mini turbine.

blogentry-133712-0-24605500-1385116346_thumb.jpgCurrent models of the engine weigh 500 pounds, easily fitting into the engine area of a conventionally-designed vehicle. According to CEO Charles Stevens, just one gram of the substance yields more energy than 7,396 gallons (28,000 litres) of petrol and eight grams would power the typical car for a century.

blogentry-133712-0-22345200-1385116349_thumb.jpgLPS is developing the technology so it can be mass-produced but whether authorities will allow thorium-powered cars to roam the streets is another question and a date has not been for a prototype version yet.

Substance is widely available, check.
Reaction is controllable, check.
Engine prototype successful, check.

So whats the problem? Sounds like we will be seeing this soon?

Petrol prices will be heading south?

@carmour read *mildy* radioactive and read *able to replace uranium in nuclear reactors* You really think this is a safe fuel to be mass marketed?

Imagine a bomb made with just 1000 engines. No need to get so much fertilizers for home made nitrate bombs anymore.

Scam Watch

There seems to be a lack of data or scientific peer reviewed reports, I will try and get an interview. As I always say..show me the data

The follow was some advice I got from one of our most trusted and qualified advisers Mark Euthanasius

Thorium is a fissile material. These guys if they were serious would be talking about a fission reactor in an automobile.
Now what kind of fission reactor can fit into an automobile? Answer: None.
What kind of fission reactor would ever be approved for mass production and distribution in millions of units? Answer: None.

  • 10 terrible wedding songs

A song can have a catchy title and/or chorus, but its true meaning is only found within its lyrics. If you're planning your wedding, any song about breakups, cheating/infidelity, and being the other woman has no business being part of the reception playlist. Most people, however, take the song title to be its meaning and don't consider its actual content. Here are 10 songs that sound romantic but should be avoided. 10) Irreplaceable – Beyoncé Don't mistake this for being

Tennis: Beautiful game that doesn't know how to count

Wimbledon just concluded yesterday (congrats Sinner!), and it's a reminder of how much I enjoy tennis as a sport. I used to play it some (wasn't particularly good), and still tangentially follow it nowadays (the Roland Garros final this year between Alcaraz and Sinner is an all-time classic).  There's something intrinsically mesmerising about the sport, I think even for spectators who have never picked up a racquet. At first glance, it may seem like just two people (or four, but doubles is
