I'm sorry BMW, but all your efforts to try convince yourselves that those who bought your 1-series are avid driving enthusiasts have failed. BMW had built the 1-series with the intention of spreading their gospel of the 'ultimate driving machine' and part of that picture they painted was the fact that rear wheel drive would be part of the recipe to build such a machine. However, it has now been revealed in a statement made by BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer during a telephone interview session with journalists that 80% of the people who bought the 1-series thought that it was front wheel drive. For those of you reading this that are part of the 80% mentioned above, I have the civic duty to inform you that the BMW 1-series is Rear Wheel Drive.

I mean honestly, don't the people who buy the 1-series read the brochure that informs them of the specifications of the car? Don't they even go through the owner's manual after they buy the car? This is pretty pathetic news. I think this is the reason BMW do not go around with the 'ultimate driving machine' statement anymore. If you look at their website, it now states 'Sheer Driving Pleasure' or 'Joy is Driving'. Nowhere does it state that BMW makes the ultimate driving machines anymore. I suppose this is justly so as no one actually buys BMWs to drive anymore. These people actually don't even care about 'sheer driving pleasure' or 'joy is driving'. They buy BMWs for the badge and even BMW knows this.

They know this as they're producing gargantuan SUV-coupes like the X6M or the X5M. These are two vehicles for people who just want an 'M' badge but don't actually like driving really fast. I say this because no matter how fast or powerful an SUV is, the car with the same engine and and drivetrain, would be able to out handle any performance SUV regardless of the situation. Then they sell the entry level 1-series to people who just want a BMW and do not actually ask which wheels drive the cars in the first place. It looks like the actual fast driving enthusiasts aren't driving BMWs anymore.

And that folks is why BMW has recently announced during that same telephone interview that they intend to build front wheel drive BMWs by 2014. Its not that they have decided to join the front wheel drive bandwagon. It's just that to 1-series owners, or future BMW entry level owners, what wheels drive the car is immaterial. They just want in on the brand. Maybe BMW should change their taglines to 'FWD? RWD? AWD? Who cares. Its a BMW' or 'joy of owning the ultimate badge'.

This is another sad day for true blue driving enthusiasts.

nothing wrong with that. Some ppl buy a car becos they can afford to... its meant for prestige and branding while others buy for its performance and so on.

Unless BMW restrict sales to those who know nuts about the car of course.

my 2 cents.

I think they should survey those who bough the 3-series... how many people knew it was FR layout? I bet less than 50% knew it was RWD. Then for those 50% who knew it was RWD, ask them what are the implications of having a RWD? I bet less than 20% know. Out of the 20% who knows the implication of RWD, I think less than 5% drive hard enough to experience it.

I'm not bashing BMW... just the consumer culture...

You don't necessarily need to take corners hard and fast to experience BMW's perfect 50-50 weight distributed FR layout.

Just a nice slow traffic light turning will show you its superiority over other cars.

  • Titan's Fall: Back to Square One

Manchester United have once again signalled a restart with the sacking of Ten Hag, and just days later, announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim, who will join midway through the first half of the current season from Sporting Lisbon. Back to square one yet again for the Red Devils who, despite being one of the most successful clubs in England and biggest clubs in the world, have not won a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Since then, they’ve gone through a whole ho

    CSI Miami, you are missed

When the original CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) first aired in 2000, I was intrigued. There had been plenty of police dramas prior to CSI, but this was the first one I watched that was focussed on forensics. From DNA to Luminol sprays to blood spatter to bullet striations, using science to unravel the mystery of a crime and compiling concrete evidence to convict criminals made for good storytelling. However, CSI was visually dark as the team featured in the show worked the night shif

    Relaxing to restoration videos

There are tons of YouTube videos one could watch to unwind and decompress at the end of the day, perhaps while having dinner. You could watch one of those nature documentaries, travel vlogs featuring beautiful beaches, or perhaps a cooking show. But there's something strangely therapeutic about watching restoration videos. And the channel I find myself drawn to is Fumicho Restoration, a channel full of videos of old motorcycles being repaired and essentially reborn. I'm not even familiar wi

    Maps

The world map is a lie.  Well, sort of. If you think of a 2D, rectangular world map, the image that comes to mind is what's called a Mercator projection: It's... a map, no doubt, but with some very obvious distortions. The most obvious one being Antarctica, which seems like almost another planet, as well as Greenland being absolutely massive and seemingly the same size as Africa, when it is in fact 1/14 the size.  Representing a 3D sphere (Earth) on a 2D surface is fundament
