Volkswagen has officially apologized for problems caused by its DSG gearboxes, in China. The German automaker acknowledges the issues related to the DQ200 7-speed dual dry clutch transmission and agreed to extend the warranty for these gearboxes to an unprecedented 10 years and 160,000km.

Consumers have been reporting the problems faced with the DSG gearboxes since last year. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine's (AQSIQ) Defective Products Management Center sent a request to the automaker, urging them to come up with a solution since they worry that the faulty gearboxes might pose a hazard to the consumers.

In response to the AQSIQ, VW implemented a software update to address the problem in Feb 2012, but refused to accept that the problem constituted a real safety risk. Local Volkswagen owners would be aware that Volkswagen Centre Singapore has also initiated a software update for the 7-speed DSG around the same period.

In China, the 30 minute software update was installed on around 500,000 VW and Skoda vehicles but soon after having the update installed, the problems came back and to make things worse, new issues are also beginning to surface.

A survey done by auto quality website 12365auto.com in early May found that VW's faulty DSG gearboxes remained the most complained about problem among automobile owners. Apparently, there is no permanent solution to the problem yet.

From a personal experience, the software update with clutch adaptation has greatly reduced the juddering at low speed. But on the day I penned this article, I am beginning to feel it again. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

  • A 20-year journey, an old passion rekindled

For us 90s babies, the Holy Trinity of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network formed a big part of our childhood. The internet was just about coming into fruition, with the rise of a plethora of websites with numerous entertaining flash games and of course, the early days of YouTube. And though those things have come and gone, one thing in my life remained constant: My love for Pokemon. I first got into Pokemon 20 years ago, and I remember exactly how it went down. Let me set the

    Fascinated by honey

If there's one natural food (aka can be eaten raw) that I absolutely love, it's honey. Yes, there are countless varieties from around the world, but for this story, we'll talk about the kind that comes straight out of a hive, complete with honeycomb. I'm not an expert on this topic, but every time I consume raw, unprocessed honey, it tastes a lot better compared to honey that comes in a jar. No squeeze-bottle honey for me, please. Perhaps it's just my imagination, but raw honey doesn't

Journey to the West: First Steps in Southwestern China, Pt. 1

It used to be that when a person was visiting China for the first time, the natural choice was Beijing. No better way to learn about a country than a visit to its capital, amirite? Having had their fill of Peking duck and climbed the Great Wall of China, the next places they would likely look at are those on the east coast - Shanghai, Nanjing, perhaps Harbin. In recent times though, the southwestern parts of China have gotten much coverage on social media. Chongqing, the country’s largest c

We did not realise that the immigration process at the Hong Kong Kowloon West station involved both the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities, so we found ourselves in a rush to board the train (we boarded minutes before the scheduled departure).
